The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-1, thanks to another pitching gem by Max Fried . Now, the starting pitcher discussed his mid-game adjustment that turned the tide of the game, according to the Yankees’ insider Bryan Hoch.
“ Max Fried abandoned his full windup mid-game. He said his second-inning walk to Andrew Monasterio prompted Matt Blake to say ‘Hey, it’s not working. When are you going to cut it out? For whatever reason, I walked a ton of guys in the windup, and I haven’t walked anyone in the stretch. You’ve got to suck up your pride and just say, whatever’s working, that’s what you’ve got to go and do,” Hoch wrote on X.
Fried tossed eight shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out nine while walking two. His performance helped stifle the Sox. It’s not the first time that Fried has shut out a team this season , as he has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, at 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA. After the Yanks struggled to start the season, they have righted the ship lately, and are 15-9, while leading the AL East.
With the Yankees aiming to win the World Series , Fried has carried the rotation while several starters, including Gerrit Cole , remain out with injuries. It was a good bounce-back for the All-Star pitcher, after he went 5 1/3 innings while allowing five earned runs on three hits and three walks in his last outing. But Fried has had five quality starts this season, including two of his last three that went eight innings.
