The New York Yankees took three of four games against the Boston Red Sox over the weekend. While the Yankees extended their lead for the top wild card spot over the Red Sox, they also saw George Lombard Jr. leave the second game of the Saturday doubleheader with right knee discomfort.

Now, the Yankees are getting an update on the status of Lombard, per Talkin' Yanks.
"Aaron Boone tells us George Lombard Jr. will not be in the lineup tonight, but he ran and took ground balls yesterday. Boone does not anticipate an IL stint, but wouldn't rule it out," the update read.

Lombard has played 23 games so far with the Yankees, hitting .253 with two home runs and six RBIs. Still, he had been struggling as of late. He was hitting just .171 over the last ten days of August, with just one RBI and one extra base hit. He had also been struggling in the field, and now has seven errors on the year already.

Jose Caballero got the start at short on Monday in place of Lombard, going 0-3 with two strikeouts. He is likely to be at short again on Tuesday night with Amed Rosario at third base.
The Yankees are 78-60 on the year , placing them in second place in the AL East. They are 4.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the division. The Yanks still have control of the top wild-card spot in the American League and have an 8.5-game cushion for a playoff spot. They continue their series with the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night.
