Rumors surfaced that the Yankees were hoping to cut payroll to get below $300 million, and owner Hal Steinbrenner addressed those rumors earlier this week.
“Would it be ideal if I went down 9with the payroll)? Of course,” Steinbrenner told reporters, via SNY . “But does that mean that’s going to happen? Of course not. We want to field a team we know can win a championship, or we believe could win a championship. It all depends on what’s out there and what the possibilities are and how much I feel we’re able or we need to pull the trigger on those possibilities.”
The Yankees ’ payroll finished at $319 million in 2025.
The Yankees last won the World Series in 2009. They returned to the Fall Classic in 2024 but ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers . In 2025, they were eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series.
New York constantly spends money in hopes to build a championship-caliber team and, according to Forbes , is highest-valued franchise at $8.2 billion.
But with Trent Grisham accepting his $22 million qualifying offer, Ryan Yarbrough signing a one-year, $2.5 million deal to remain in New York, and if the Yankees bring back Cody Bellinger , they’d likely be over $300 million.
According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts , the Yankees are set to have a $278.1 million payroll in 2026, including an $18.7 million CBT.
