The Tampa Bay Rays walked into Fourth of July predicted to launch some baseball fireworks . But Yordan Alvarez fired off the biggest one for the Houston Astros .
Alvarez broke the 8-8 tie off this home run blast, culminating in the 10-8 win.
Houston's Jose Altuve started the ninth with a walk. Alvarez faced a 1-2 count (one ball, two strikeouts) before facing the 93 miles per hour fastball. He powered the baseball over center field, launching the in-stadium fireworks inside Daikin Park. Alvarez hit notable Independence Day history too, becoming the only player in league history to hit multiple walk-off homers on the fourth .
Alvarez led Houston with three hits and drove six different runners home. But he set the tone for the Astros early. He smashed a two-run homer during the bottom of the first inning, also bringing the all-star Altuve home. Alvarez smacked a 95 mph sinker to start the holiday scoring for the home team.
Alvarez flied out in the third inning. But then he pounded a single to left field that scored Nick Allen and moved Altuve to third base. He later smashed a sacrifice fly ball deep to right field, luring Taylor Trammell home in the process for the RBI.
So Alvarez sparked the fireworks as the nation celebrates its 250th birthday. Altuve delivered two hits to finish second on Houston for the evening, plus scored three runs to lead the way. Yanier Diaz smacked one hit but drove two of his Astros teammates home.
Houston prevented Tampa from stretching its winning streak to 10. The Astros are now 44-47 overall including 22-24 at their home venue. Houston also snapped its two-game slide in the process.
