New York Giants training camp is underway (well, at least for the rookies), so we are that much closer to the start of the regular season.
For the most part, the Giants' roster is mostly set. There will certainly be a few position battles this summer, but we generally know the cast of characters that will be on the 53-man roster come Week 1.

But could there be some surprises between now and the season opener?
Let's be real: there are always some stunners when it comes to roster decisions, and New York should be no exception heading into 2026.
One area to watch in particular is the backfield.
The Giants will have Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy as their top two running backs. We know that. But who will serve as the No. 3?
Smart money is on Devin Singletary, who restructured his contract to remain in New York earlier this offseason. Many expected him to be cut, but John Harbaugh decided to hold on to the veteran. At least for now .
The Giants nabbed a very intriguing undrafted free agent in Damon Bankston, who starred at Weber State and New Mexico on the collegiate level.

Last season with the Lobos, Bankston rushed for 635 yards and five touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry while also hauling in 31 receptions for 397 yards and three scores.

The year prior, Bankston racked up 1,104 rushing yards at Weber State.
Additionally, the 5-foot-10 speedster possesses special teams prowess, as he punched in a pair of kick return touchdowns in 2025. Don't think for a second that doesn't matter, because Harbaugh will surely take Bankston's versatility into account.
So, does Bankston actually stand a chance of winning a roster spot ?
I think out of all of the Giants' bubble players, Bankston has the best shot. He's just 23 years old, he has potential and Singletary has been a major disappointment ever since signing a three-year deal with Big Blue in March 2024.

I understand that New York may value his experience, especially given that Skattebo is coming off of a significant injury. But the Giants are still in rebuilding mode, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. They should have the future in mind, and Bankston is much more intriguing than Singletary in that regard.
If Bankston puts together a strong training camp and preseason, I could absolutely envision a scenario in which he bumps Singletary off the roster. Or, perhaps he will make the cut over someone else at a different position if New York views him as a special teamer.
There are certainly no guarantees, but Bankston's name is definitely one to monitor this summer.
