- New York Giants signing Shelby Harris: 5 things to know about the DT
The New York Giants are signing defensive tackle Shelby Harris , who has built an impressive 11-year NFL career as a reliable veteran interior lineman, defying his late-round draft status through perseverance, adaptability, and a strong commitment to family and community.
Originally from Wisconsin, the 34-year-old has navigated multiple team changes while maintaining consistent production and carving out a meaningful role in the league. Beyond the gridiron, Harris's journey includes personal challenges, athletic versatility from his basketball roots, and a dedication to giving back.
Here are five notable aspects of his story that highlight both his professional resilience and life off the field.

Late-round pick to journeyman veteran
Selected in the seventh round (235th overall) of the 2014 NFL draft by the then-Oakland Raiders , Harris has enjoyed a lengthy career across seven franchises, including the Raiders, Jets , Cowboys, Broncos, Seahawks , Browns, and now the Giants.
Through the 2025 season, he has appeared in 146 regular-season games, recording 358 tackles, 28.5 sacks, 40 passes defensed, five forced fumbles, and one interception. His durability and versatility have made him a valuable rotational piece despite early-career setbacks.
Master of blocked kicks with basketball roots
Harris has blocked six kicks in his NFL career, combining field goals and point-after attempts. He credits this skill to his high school basketball days at Homestead High School, where he claims to be the career leader in blocked shots. That timing and leaping ability have translated seamlessly to swatting passes and disrupting kicks at the line of scrimmage, adding a unique dimension to his defensive contributions.

Advocate for son's rare medical condition
Harris has openly shared his family's experience after his son, Shelby Jr., was diagnosed with Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), a rare and serious food allergy. By raising awareness publicly, he has helped educate others about the challenges families face with this condition, demonstrating strength and vulnerability beyond football.
Community ambassador and mentor
Dedicated to inspiring the next generation, Harris has served as an ambassador for the "Stay in the Game!" attendance initiative. He has also returned to his alma mater, Homestead High School, to speak with student-athletes, offering guidance drawn from his own path of resilience and growth.

The veteran "Unc" in the locker room
Teammates affectionately refer to Harris as "Unc," "OG," or "Big Shell," reflecting the significant age gap with younger players and his role as a respected elder statesman. As a father of four with an 18-year-old daughter nearing college age, he brings wisdom, stability, and leadership to every defensive line he joins.
