The battered and bruised New York Jets have made another move of a player to their crowded injured reserve list.
Offensive lineman Max Mitchell has been placed on injured reserve with a head injury sustained during practice. This is the second time in his Jets career he's been on the list. Mitchell signed a one-year deal with the Jets in March 2026 for $2 million.
To replace him, the Jets have signed offensive tackle Blake Freeland to the active roster, and subsequently released cornerback Tre Brown from injured reserve.
The 6-7, 302-pound Freeland was waived by the Indianapolis Colts in August, then was signed to the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad.
Freeland, played collegiately at BYU and was selected by Indianapolis in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft. He made nine starts as a rookie while appearing in 16 total games.
In 2024, he appeared in nine games and logged 36 special teams snaps and 23 on offense. Freeland missed the entire 2025 season with a fracture in his right leg.
Mitchell missed the last two games, both Jets defeats. This season, he has played 22 special teams snaps over the first six weeks.
He was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Jets, and has had 17 starts and 45 game appearances for the team.
Brown was placed on the reserved/injured list on Aug. 30. In the preseason, he played 96 snaps on defense and 15 on special teams.
He was initially signed to the Jets' practice squad on Nov. 11 last season after he was released by the Los Angeles Rams. He appeared in 10 games in 2025 – five each with the Rams and Jets – and primarily contributed on special teams.
Brown was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma and has appeared in 49 career games and totaled 82 tackles, 8 PDs, 2 FF and 1 INT, which he returned for a touchdown.
