The early Pro Football Focus grades are out for Week 8, and the New York Jets have great numbers in all but one category – the most important one, the scoreboard, which shows them losing 38-33 to the Las Vegas Raiders.
PFF ratings are based on human evaluation of every player's performance on every individual play, measuring how well they executed their specific assignment rather than just looking at traditional box-score stats
Analysts review All-22 game tape and grade each player on every snap using a scale from -2.0 to +2.0 in 0.5 increments. A grade of 0 represents expected performance on a routine play. Standard level in the NFL is a grade of 60.
The Jets had a long injury list for this game, but several unsung players stepped up for their hurting comrades.
The Jets piled up 439 yards in offense, and that's reflected in the PFF stats. Quarterback Geno Smith had 290 yards on 20-32 with two touchdowns. Unfortunately, his last pass was the killer, an end zone interception that sealed the Jets defeat.
For his efforts, Smith graded out at 92.2, the second-highest score of the game next to Raiders tight end Brock Bowers, who wrecked the Jets and came in with a 93.1 that included two touchdown catches.
Jets tight end Jelani Woods apparently made his 18 snaps count with a 91.3, no doubt helping to keep the Raiders Maxx Crosby mostly contained. Woods didn't have a reception but was key in helping the Jets' pass protection.
Isaiah Williams made the most of 10 snaps, coming in at a 91.2. He caught an 18-yard touchdown pass, generating more than 100 yards when you add in his kickoff and punt return yardage.
No. 2 receiver Adonai Mitchell had his best game as a NY Jet. He caught 7 of his 9 targets for 142 yards and a touchdown, keeping the Jets in the game until the final drive. PFF rated him a 90.5.
Rookie Darrell Jackson Jr. did yeoman's work filling in for defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat, who is on injured reserve with a knee injury. Jackson had a season-high 42 snaps and produced an 80.2 PFF rating, continuing his fine debut season.
Next to him was edge Will McDonald IV, who had 36 snaps in the game and produced the only Jets sack. He came in at a 79.1 in what may be one of his last games as a Jet, given the Nov. 10 trade deadline and the rumor mill surrounding his status.
In addition to Sweat, the Jets were missing edges David Bailey and Joseph Ossai for this game. Into the breach came defensive end Nate Lynn, who had 28 snaps and a 78.2. He was joined by defensive tackle Jack Heflin, who played 21 snaps and produced a 75.6 PFF grade.
