The New York Jets will be severely depleted on the defensive line for their Sunday game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Officially ruled out are massive defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat and edge Joseph Ossai. On the cusp of being officially declared out is edge David Bailey, who has missed all three practices this week with a groin injury. He is listed as doubtful on the injury report, and his absence would be a big blow to any Jets hopes of taking down the Raiders.
Linemen Darrell Jackson Jr., Nate Lynn and Harrison Phillips will be asked to step into the breach on defense for the Jets. Lynn had a sack against Miami (his first, along with his first NFL tackle), while Jackson has done well in limited appearances.
Phillips, who has played for the Vikings and the Bills, has been less successful. His PFF grade is an abysmal 49.2, ranking 102 out of 126 qualified linemen. But he is a big body and will have to step up in the absence of Sweat, who has been a rock in the middle for the Jets.
The injury news on the other side of the ball is a bit brighter for the Jets. Running back Braelon Allen has been cleared after fully practicing on Thursday and Friday. Allen had a minor ankle injury sustained in the Miami game.
Listed as questionable is running back Breece Hall, who has been out since Week 3 with a quad injury. He was limited during this week's practices.
"He's a key cog of what we're doing," head coach Aaron Glenn said of Hall. "And each time he goes out [and practices], man, there are certain points that he has to hit to make sure that we're all good and we want to make sure we hit those points."
If Hall plays – a game-time decision – he will likely see limited action and share the backfield with Allen, who has been the No. 2 rusher in the NFL for the time period he's taken over from Hall as the lead back.
Left guard Dylan Parham was given a surprisingly good injury update. He fully participated in practice on Friday and will likely see at least spot duty. He's been out with a knee injury since Week 3 against Detroit, but was playing as well as any Jets lineman when he went down.
The Raiders have a much better health situation than the Jets. The only definite scratch was edge Patrick Johnson.
Tight end Brock Bowers practiced fully this week, a big plus for the Raiders, who often use two tight ends.
