If you just look at the numbers, you'd swear the New York Jets had an easy game against the Miami Dolphins.
You'd be wrong, of course. The Jets lost to the previously winless Dolphins despite some strong Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades for their players.
Pro Football Focus (PFF) ratings are based on human evaluation of every player's performance on every individual play, measuring how well they executed their specific assignment rather than just looking at traditional box-score stats.
Analysts review All-22 game tape and grade each player on every snap using a scale from -2.0 to +2.0 in 0.5 increments. A grade of 0 represents expected performance on a routine play. Standard level in the NFL is a grade of 60.
Tight end Mason Taylor led the PFF parade for the Jets. The second-year player out of LSU had two touchdown catches and caught a two-point extra in his busiest day ever, earning a 91.3 grade on 37 snaps.
Right behind him was quarterback Geno Smith, who had three touchdown passes and an interception. Smith was under pressure the entire game and suffered two sacks. But he still came in with an 82.6 grade for rallying his team from a 21-7 halftime deficit, which wasn't enough to overcome the Dolphins in the Jets 28-25 loss.
Rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. had his second straight 100-yard game, hauling in a touchdown pass and generally providing the lone deep threat for the Jets. Cooper had an 81.1 PFF grade, following up his strong performance in the Week 6 game against the New England Patriots. His numbers in that contest – more than 100 yards receiving and a touchdown – won him the NFL Rookie of the Week award, the third Jets rookie this season to cop the honor.
Right tackle Armand Membou had a 79.9, one of the few bright spots on a New York Jets offensive line that was constantly being knocked back.
For the defense, edge Kingsley Enagbare came in with an 83.2 PFF grade. He no doubt benefitted from the double teaming fellow edge David Bailey was seeing.
Big T'Vondre Sweat continued his strong play in the middle of the line, getting a 75.8 from PFF before exiting with what appeared to be a leg injury. He'll be missed if he has to sit out for a while.
Rounding out the Jets PFF scorecard was linebacker Jamien Sherwood, who continued his renaissance with a 74.1.
