New England Patriots linebacker Robert Spillane is now in his second season with the team and has been a force in the second level of defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr's defense.
During his press conference yesterday, Kuhr applauded Spillane as a player and leader for his unit.
"He just has such a strong leadership quality. He's got a strong work ethic," said Kuhr. "My biggest thing is Robert, especially this past week, is just his effort, man. His effort never wavers."
"And a guy that's playing damn near all the snaps to never waver his effort, on top of the intelligence, on top of the physicality, on top of the leadership, you know, and his presence on the sideline, you know, it's just great to have out there."
Captain Spillane
After being elected as a team captain last season, in his first year with New England, Spillane was once again rewarded with the captain title this season.
Spillane also serves as New England's primary defensive signal caller.
As one of the veterans on Zak Kuhr's unit, he has been able to relay head coach Mike Vrabel's message to the defense's younger players and show them what it's like to be an NFL player.
Spillane also leads by example with his performance on the field. Last season, he recorded 97 tackles with one sack and a forced fumble. He also proved to be effective in pass coverage with two interceptions.
This season is more of the same for Spillane, who, through four games, has 29 tackles and a forced fumble. According to PFF, Spillane's coverage grade of 74.8 ranks 15th among qualified linebackers.
His coverage ability will be put to the test facing the Raiders' two elite tight ends in Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer.
On Sunday, New England's defense will be without multiple options in the secondary. Kuhr will rely on key veterans, including Robert Spillane, to get the defense prepared for another tough matchup against the 3-1 Las Vegas Raiders .
