A trip overseas has wrapped up with a winning streak for the Carolina Panthers .
Their latest triumph went down at Allianz Arena from Munich, Germany on Sunday, where they walked off on the New York Giants for a 20-17 victory . The team now has its first winning streak since 2022 and has bested last season's win total.
Let's look at some of the biggest takeaways from the thrilling overtime outing:
Chuba Hubbard 's career day
A significant reason why the Panthers won this game is because of their star running back. Chuba Hubbard ran for a career-high 153 yards and a touchdown in the overtime victory—a rather fitting follow-up to the four-year, $33.2 million contract extension he just signed on Thursday.
Hubbard has had an immense impact on what head coach Dave Canales is trying to build with his offense and his culture. His growth into one of the league's best rushers has been a pleasant sight for a Panthers team that wasn't doing much winning in the first eight games of the season.
The Panthers would be smart to continue to lean into their workhorse coming off the bye week.
Bryce Young continues to grow
Headlining this two-game win streak has been the progress from Young, who has seemingly regained his confidence as a passer. That showed against the Giants, as he connected on 15 of his 25 throws for 126 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions in a very clean offering.
Throughout the game, the second-year quarterback was making accurate throws with timing and anticipation. He had a couple of misses in terms of his accuracy and progressions post-snap, but continued to play in rhythm.
There were a couple of underwhelming throws on the Panthers final drive of regulation, but the first half should be a clear sign of his confidence creeping back as he plays with plenty of energy and emotion.
Young is part of a youth movement that has recently taken over this team. He should continue to build chemistry with his rookie playmakers in Xavier Legette , Jalen Coker and Ja'Tavion Sanders as this movement marches on.
D.J. Wonnum 's debut sparks defense
Carolina's free-agent signing of D.J. Wonnum looked to be doomed before the outside linebacker even stepped on the field. A season-ending quad tear from 2023 leaked well over into the beginning of his tenure with the Panthers, as he went through a number of scary setbacks as a result of the injury.
So it was unclear how effective he'd be in his long-awaited debut this morning. But fortunately for Carolina, he became the much-needed spark for one of the worst defenses in football.
Wonnum was a terror from the jump. He offered a great deal of explosiveness and pass-rush discipline while showing penetration and edge-setting ability as a force defender. Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero maneuvered him to multiple alignments to set up winnable matchups, and it worked in their favor.
Today was a great sign for the Panthers and Wonnum, who closed up his first game with six tackles and a sack.
Keep it simple
One of the most frustrating aspects of Carolina's overtime victory was the fact that it didn't have to come to that point.
The Panthers held a 17-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter, and then the Giants scored 10 unanswered points. A key part of this happening was player execution, but the coaching should not get a pass.
Canales was, once again, inconsistent with his play-calling and play choices in certain situations– especially late in the game. Instead of simplifying the path to victory by leaning into Hubbard to open up the air attack, he may have overthought his philosophy.
In addition, defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero called a decent game, until late in the fourth quarter.
He made the questionable decision to play off-coverage in the overtime-clinching drive for New York, which did not tighten throwing windows for struggling quarterback Daniel Jones . Against New Orleans , the Panthers played press-man in the team's final defensive play to win the game and were successful.
Carolina has the personnel on the perimeter to play press-man as much as they like. This could allow them to tee off from the edge and generate more pressure than they did today.
The simple things should be simple.
