Off to the big leagues for Florida A&M baseball catcher Ty Hanchey .
Following the 2023 MLB Draft on Tuesday, the Virginia Beach native signed a free-agent contract to play for the San Francisco Giants .
Hanchey's signing comes on the heels of participating in the Inaugural HBCU Swingman Classic last Friday in Seattle during MLB All-Star Weekend.
The last FAMU player selected in the MLB Draft was first baseman Aubrey McCarty in 2017 when he was chosen in the 26th round by the Colorado Rockies .
Hanchey recently helped the Rattlers win the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Championship over Bethune-Cookman last May to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Gainesville Regional.
Though FAMU fell to eventual Men's College World Series runner-ups Florida and tenth-ranked UConn by three runs apiece, Hanchey became the first player in program history to be named to an NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team. He also notched 2023 All-SWAC First Team honors .
Prior to his 2022 arrival to FAMU, Hanchey assisted fellow NCAA Division I HBCU Norfolk State in winning the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament Championship .
Hanchey tallied a .352 batting average, 76 hits, and 11 homeruns for FAMU during the 2022-2023 season.
