- Florida fires coach Dan Mullen in fourth season with Gators, one day after loss to Missouri
The Dan Mullen era with the Florida Gators has come to a close.
A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports on Sunday that the Gators fired Mullen as head coach one day after they dropped to 5-6 on the season, following a one-point, overtime loss to the Missouri Tigers. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

Mullen leaves Gainesville with a 34-15 record, though the program's performance took a drastic turn for the worse in his two most recent seasons. Mullen was in his fourth season with the Gators and went 21-5 in his first two years. Since then, he went 13-10.
Mullen's Gators came into the 2021 season with some fairly high expectations — Florida entered at No. 11 on the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.
ESPN was the first to report the news.
Florida running backs coach and special teams coordinator Greg Knox will serve as interim coach for the Gators, the school confirmed.

According to the terms of Mullen's contract, he will be owed a buyout of a little more than $12 million.
The Gators need to beat in-state rival Florida State next Saturday to become bowl-eligible. Florida has lost five consecutive games to Power 5 conference opponents.
