Just as spring training camp opens , the Guardians are adding to their stable of pitchers.
The Guardians and right-handed pitcher Jakob Junis have agreed to a one-year deal, according to an ESPN report . The deal reportedly is still pending a physical and would include $4.5 million in guarantees.
The club confirmed the signing Sunday morning.
How Jakob Junis could fit with the Guardians
Junis, 32, has experience both as a starter and as a reliever, though he has primarily operated out of the bullpen over the last couple of years.
Last season, Junis posted a 2.69 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 67 innings for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers . He appeared in 24 games, starting six and finishing four as he bounced between roles.
Junis gives manager Stephen Vogt and the Guardians another pitcher who could end up in either role as needed, but considering the amount of competition among the starters and Junis' recent work, he's more likely than not to end up in the bullpen.
The Guardians will likely open camp with three spots open in the both the starting rotation and the bullpen, inviting plenty of competition , so they have plenty left to figure out leading up to Opening Day.
