Senior Jonas Nichols became the all-time leading scorer for Archbishop Hoban boys basketball Thursday night in a 76-41 win over Spire at Barry Gymnasium.
Nichols scored 33 points to bring his career total to 1,373 points, dropping Collen Gurley to second on Hoban's scoring list with 1,360 points.
"Tonight was probably Jonas' all-time high and we took him out with six and a half minutes left [in the fourth quarter]," Hoban coach T.K. Griffith said . "He probably would have broken the single-game record, which is 39 points, but I think I might have played the best defense on him tonight.
"... Jonas was feeling good from the very beginning of the game."
Nichols helped Hoban win the Division I state championship last year .
Hoban alums Bob Lucey and Evan Pannell have the school's single-game record for points in a game with 39.
Hoban freshman John Johnson scored nine points and senior Sam Mazzola chipped in eight points.
Ironically, Gurley , a 2018 Hoban graduate, became the Mount Union men's basketball all-time leading scorer Wednesday night in a 100-68 win over Baldwin Wallace. Griffith attended that game to watch Gurley , a graduate senior, and his son, BW freshman Andrew Griffith.
Gurley has 1,722 career points at Mount Union.
"It is weird, but I feel like it is the power of the Hoban family," said T.K. Griffith , a 1989 Hoban graduate. "Both people are great guys and great basketball players. Jonas , the way he bought into staying at Hoban for four years in today's culture and really cherish the relationships and the formation and transformational experience at Hoban, it means the world to me.
"He could have easily left after his sophomore year like a lot of kids are doing now and kind of upgraded to a bigger program or go to Huntington Prep, or go to IMG or go to Spire. I know that was on the table.
"The commitment that Collen and Jonas have to the Hoban family at large, and the way they have grown as young men is impressive. Jonas was on the highest honors for the first quarter [this school year], which is unbelievable, compared to where he started and not taking academics all that seriously. There is so much growth and pride in both of these guys, and then of course they can put the ball in the hole and it is fun to watch them play."
Juniors Caitlyn Holmes and Sanaiiya Gray led host Ellet to a 42-30 win over Garfield to win the City Series regular-season title with an undefeated record .
Holmes scored 15 points and Gray contributed eight points for Ellet (14-4, 10-0).
Senior Andie Osolin scored 23 points to lead visiting Norton to a 58-28 win over Springfield.
Freshman Haley Sanderson chipped in 12 points for the Panthers (11-6, 11-1 Metro Athletic Conference).
