- Kalen DeBoer sees 'opportunity' for Alabama football quarterback Ty Simpson in 2025
MOBILE, Ala. — Standing outside Hancock Whitney Stadium at the Senior Bowl where former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe was getting looked at by NFL scouts, Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer spoke glowingly of what was to come for the Crimson Tide at quarterback.
Alabama will have a new starting quarterback taking reps when the Crimson Tide opens the 2025 season on the road against Florida State . And as spring practice nears, DeBoer said he sees an opportunity for incoming redshirt junior Ty Simpson .
"You certainly appreciate what he's done," DeBoer said Tuesday. "Just continued to work on what he can control, and that's himself. Continued to build relationships to get ready for this chance that he has right in front of him to not just step up as a leader, because I think he's been doing that. But to have that opportunity to step in and be the quarterback."
Simpson was Milroe's backup quarterback for the past two seasons, while also backing up Bryce Young in 2022. In three seasons, Simpson has 381 career passing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
"I love this place," Simpson told the Tuscaloosa News. "If I didn't, I would have left, you know what I mean? But I love Tuscaloosa. I love the University of Alabama. I love the fans. I love the program. I love my teammates. And that's the reason why I stayed."
Simpson is not the only quarterback vying for starting reps in 2025.
Simpson is joined by Austin Mack , the former 2023 four-star, who followed DeBoer from Washington to Alabama, and 2025 five-star Keelon Russell.
While DeBoer doesn't see experience in Alabama's quarterback room, he sees ample amounts of potential.
"The biggest thing is there's not a lot of snaps that have been taken on the college football field. I also feel like the skillset is there," DeBoer said. "There are some very strong strengths that we have and I'm excited about them. Being similar in a lot of ways, of course, everybody's different. They got things that they bring to the table. But all three just work together, and it's really led to workouts already that they are running. Sounds like they are very efficient and got a lot of work done. I'm excited for what they all bring to the table. Can't wait to get back on campus in February and work with them."
