Wednesday's high school results: Green, STVM, Tallmadge, Streetsboro girls basketball win
GIRLS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS
GREEN 62, HOBAN 55 (2OT)Junior Sydney Shocklee scored 22 points to lead the visiting Bulldogs (13-8) to a win over the Knights (15-3).
"Going into the tournament, we wanted to start off strong," Shocklee said. "We really bought into our scouting report. I think this was the best team basketball that we have played. A lot of us felt the energy and passion to get back at them because they put us out of the tournament in the district last year. We wanted to win this game."
Green junior Jenna Slates contributed 15 points and eight rebounds, sophomore Armahni Wagler had 14 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Ava Kouri scored nine points.
"I feel amazing," Wagler said. "We have been practicing and waiting for this game. We definitely showed out in this game. We played very well."
Slates scored five of Green's 10 points in the second overtime.
"This win gives us a lot of confidence, especially when we just put in a new defense, and this was our first time running it in different positions," Slates said.
Slates holds the program's career records for rebounds and steals as a junior.
"We went into this game treating it like it was a tournament game," Green coach Alicia Manning said. "This is great practice. Hoban is a phenomenal team. They are well coached and they play hard. I have a ton of respect for them and the way that they can motivate their kids to play as hard as they do.
"For us to get this win, I think it is a motivator going into the tournament that we can be in these big games. We have proven it throughout the year. ... This is definitely a confidence boost."
Sophomore Makenzie Grant and senior Mackenzie Edingburgh paced Hoban with 12 points apiece, sophomore Zoey Hodge scored 10 points and sophomore Niera Stevens chipped in eight points. Grant grabbed 11 rebounds and Edingburgh had nine rebounds.
"We had opportunities," Hoban coach Pamela Davis said. "We missed wide-open layups where we were not touched under the basket. That really ruined our momentum, especially early on in the game. We missed a lot of rotations defensively and we kind of looked slow.
"I know that Green probably had a little bit of revenge on their mind from a year ago. This group doesn't totally understand that because my leadership from last year graduated. This group is still relatively young overall. This will be a regrouping experience and we have to get ready for Wadsworth in a week and then we have to look forward to the tournament after that. ... We are 15-3 and that is not a bad record. We are playing pretty well this season overall."
