How Oregon's newest transfer addition impacts the Ducks' secondary

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks made a late play in the transfer portal, picking up a veteran defensive back on Monday afternoon. Former Ole Miss Rebels and Tulane Green Wave dender Jadon Canady will be transferring to Oregon for the 2025 season , utilizing his final year of eligibility with the Ducks .

This may seem like a surprising move to some , seeing as the Ducks have a lot of talent in the secondary, but the addition of Canady offers a lot of flexibility for Oregon in the new season, seeing as he has shown some unique versatility and an ability to move around in the secondary, whether it be at outside cornerback, inside as a slot defender, or deep as a free safety.

So how will this move impact the Ducks' secondary in spring football and beyond? That's a question that we want to dive into. There are players on the roster who will now face more competition for a starting spot, and others who may be moved around a bit as a ripple effect of this addition.

Here's a look at the potential impacts so far as we see them:

Projected Backups

I would argue that the player most impacted by the addition of Canady is defensive back Daylen Austin, who I had projected to be the starting nickel going into 2025. That very well still could be the case, but he will have more competition now with a veteran player coming into the room.

I'm also open to the idea that Canady might not end up at the nickel once spring ball and fall camp come to a close. One of the benefits of this move is how versatile he is, and the fact that he can move around to different positions in the secondary and find a home. That gives Lanning and defensive backs coach Chris Hampton a bevy of options going into the offseason.
