The Carolina Panthers and head coach Dave Canales may finally have that extra quarterback that they've been looking for .
According to Joe Person of The Athletic , the team is expected to add Jake Luton to their training camp roster. The 28-year-old passer spent much of the 2023 campaign in Carolina—where he not only spent the summer, but also picked up three stints on the practice squad.
Luton, a sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2020, first joined the Panthers last July. He'd go on to appear in all three of the team's preseason outings—completing eight of his 19 passing attempts for 119 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
After joining Carolina to start the season, Luton was signed off their practice squad by the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 26. He'd be released by the NFC South rivals less than a month later.
The Panthers would then bring Luton back to the practice squad on two separate occasions, only to release him on Dec. 20.
With backup quarterback Andy Dalton set to miss multiple weeks due to a quad injury , Luton should be in line to see more exhibition action this summer.
