- Terrence Jones, Caleb Dean lead Texas Tech track and field to NCAA championship
The Texas Tech men's track and field team won a national championship Saturday in Boston with Terrence Jones completing a sprint double and Caleb Dean winning the 60-meter hurdles.
Jones won the 60 meters for the second year in a row then took the 200 a little while later on The Track at New Balance. The 6-foot-4 senior ran the 60 in 6.54 seconds and the 200 in 20.23, becoming the first man to sweep the two events at the NCAA indoor championships since Houston's Elijah Hall did it in 2018.

Dean, the second-year transfer from Maryland, scored in three events. He out-leaned Southern California's Johnny Brackins to win the 60 hurdles, placed sixth in the 60 meters and ran on the Red Raiders' 1,600-meter relay.
The Red Raiders, ranked fifth in the latter going into the meet, finished fourth in 3 minutes, 3.37 seconds. Dean led off, followed by Carl Hicks, Josh Bour and Shaemar Uter.
Tech finished with 50 1/2 points, followed by Arkansas with 41, Florida with 39, Northern Arizona with 31 and North Carolina with 26.
The Tech women finished tied for 15th with 16 points, but claimed an individual national championship when Ruta Lasmane won the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet, 5 3/4 inches, a facility record. It was Lasmane's sixth time to achieve first-team all-America status, which is accorded the top eight finishers at an NCAA championship meet.

The title was the second national championship for Texas Tech track and field, the first indoor. The Red Raiders won the national outdoor in 2019 in Austin.
The 60 was a key for the Red Raiders, who had five of the 16 qualifiers to the NCAA indoor championships and advanced three to the finals. With U.S. sprinter star Noah Lyles looking on, they piled up 19 points in that event with Jones, Don'Dre Swint and Dean finishing first, third and sixth. Swint ran 6.60 and Dean 6.67.

Texas Tech scored all its points on the last day of the three-day meet, beginning in the high jump with Omamuyovwi Erhire tying for fifth place. Former South Plains College star Romaine Beckford, now competing for Arkansas, won the event.
Uter took sixth in the 400 meters, running 45.94. That was one of the pleasant surprises the Red Raiders needed, given that Uter was ranked 14th in the event coming out of the conference championships two weeks earlier.
Texas Tech's Terrence Jones celebrates his first place time in the 200 meters at the Big 12 indoor track and field meet, Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at the Sports Performance Center.
