The Texas Tech football program on Friday announced the hiring of Mack Leftwich from Texas State to be the Red Raiders ' offensive coordinator, fulfilling coach Joey McGuire's objective to not radically change approaches.
Leftwich, 30, has been an offensive coordinator the past two years at Texas State and the year before at Incarnate Word with potent, highly ranked attacks each season.
McGuire hired Leftwich four days after Florida Atlantic hired Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley as head coach.
"It was important as we transitioned offensive coordinators to keep our identity as a tempo-based, balanced offense, which perfectly fits Coach Leftwich," McGuire said in Tech's announcement. "In a short period of time, he has quickly become one of the nation's top coordinators and has done so by staying balanced, which following the success of Tahj Brooks the past two seasons, was important as we continue to build this program.
"We couldn't be more excited to welcome Coach Leftwich and his family here to Texas Tech."

Leftwich was a college offensive coordinator for the first time with Incarnate Word in 2022, and that team led the FCS in scoring offense (51.5 ppg), team passing efficiency (193.62 rating) and first downs (374).
Each of the past two years, Texas State has averaged 37 points per game and ranked 11th in the FBS in scoring offense. Last year, Texas State (8-5) was 15th in the FBS in total offense, averaging 457.6 yards per game. This season, the Bobcats (7-5) are sixth in total offense, averaging 474.3 yards per game. They've been top-30 in both rushing offense and passing offense both seasons.
Leftwich spent his early years in Denton when his father Spencer Leftwich was an assistant at North Texas. He was a prolific high-school quarterback in Pennsylvania , throwing for 3,300 yards and 45 touchdowns in leading Wexford North Allegheny to a 16-0 season and Class 4A state championship his senior year. He was the Pennsylvania player of the year that season and 30-1 in his last two years.
Leftwich played at Texas-El Paso from 2013-15, starting against Tech in Lubbock in 2015. After an injury, he began his coaching career as a Miners student assistant in 2016. He was a high-school offensive coordinator at Kyle Lehman in 2017. Hired by Eric Morris at Incarnate Word, Leftwich spent five years as a Cardinals graduate assistant (2018), quarterbacks coach (2019-21) and offensive coordinator (2022).
