Trevor Lawrence is not ruling out surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder after suffering an AC joint sprain in Week 9. He has not played for the Jacksonville Jaguars since Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles when he originally sustained the injury .
"It's been a pretty difficult thing to gauge, honestly, of what's the best path forward. Definitely something that I'm considering and not off the table at all. It's something that we're going to have to just, truly, day by day, week by week [figure out]," Lawrence said Wednesday when asked if surgery on his shoulder could be an option at some point.
"Hopefully, I'm able to get out there this week or as soon as possible and then it's going to be just every week, kind of evaluating it, seeing where it's at and obviously up until this point I've been doing everything I can to avoid that and want to be back out there with my guys and finish the season. So that's my goal, that's what I want to do with it. Beyond that, I really wish I had a better answer for you, but I just don't right now."
GETTING BETTER: Trevor Lawrence to practice, take 'bulk' of reps says Jacksonville Jaguars' Doug Pederson
Lawrence took more snaps in practice Wednesday with head coach Doug Pederson saying in the morning that the plan was for Lawrence to get the "bulk" of the reps. He has not played the last two games of the season for Jacksonville and missed all of practice in the lead-up to the team's Week 11 game against the Detroit Lions.
Lawrence said that he's feeling better after sitting out for around three weeks, including the team's Week 12 bye week.
"I'm feeling better... It's good for me to be able to rest and try to heal up as much as possible. So, I've definitely made some progress, feeling better, been able to do a little bit more," said Lawrence, noting that the injury has taken a little longer than he wanted, to heal.
Lawrence said that the plan is to ramp up his participation level and what he does on the practice field each day to see how he moves. He called it a "balancing act."
"I felt pretty good up to this point. It's kind of a balancing act. You don't want to push it too hard and set it back, but you also want to get yourself ready to play. So that's what we're doing today and tomorrow and just going to see how it responds and how I feel and I feel like we have a great plan," said Lawrence.
Trevor Lawrence preparing to play vs. Texans despite shoulder injury, will be mostly a pain-tolerance issue
Lawrence will take precautions if he can suit up with the AC joint sprain, including wearing protective padding underneath his shoulder pads to guard him against big hits he will inevitably take in games.
But, there won't be much else the fourth-year QB can do to protect himself.
"You just get hit a certain way. It's kind of funny how it happens. Usually, you land on it, but this one I got hit from the side, which is a little bit different, but you got to get hit the right way. So I'm hoping that it's not an issue, just any hit, hopefully, that's not a problem," said Lawrence.
While pain tolerance will be a hurdle for Lawrence to jump, he explained that more than the shoulder is impacted.
"I think there are other effects in that area of having this injury, especially the severity of where it's at. It does affect other muscles, it affects kind of the whole of that side and that's why I haven't been able to do much until recently, which has been positive that I'm getting rid of some of the pain, which has been good and being able to move and do more and my strength is pretty good," Lawrence said.

Lawrence said that, while the injury is commonplace in the NFL, AC joint injuries can vary.
"So, yeah, I mean a lot of it is pain tolerance as far as the actual AC [joint] goes, I mean that injury is fairly common in football, but they're all different," Lawrence explained. "I had this one [last year], it kept me out for a week. It was the throwing shoulder, I couldn't throw with it. And then after two weeks of rest, once we got to play Tennessee in Week 18, I felt a good bit better enough to play. This one's just taken longer so they're all different."
