TAMPA, Fla. — Kane Wommack knows exactly what he wants out of an Alabama football transfer portal addition.
It's the same thing Alabama general manager Courtney Morgan sees in former Utah cornerback Cameron Calhoun : a player who is a "known commodity."
It's the Crimson Tide 's transfer portal plan, one centered around "experienced value," Wommack said. And in Calhoun, the Alabama defensive coordinator sees a perfect fit, a player who can play multiple positions and "do a lot of different things."
"He's shown physicality. He's long," Wommack said. "He looks like our guys."
Calhoun transferred to Utah after one season with the Wolverines and played in 11 games in 2024, recording 21 tackles, nine pass break-ups — fourth-best in the Big 12 — and an interception.
But that is not the only thing Alabama looks for in a transfer.
Wommack wants confidence, players who believe they can play at Alabama.
"More often than not, there's a number of guys that are excited about it, interested in it. But when the rubber meets the road, they don't think they can play here, so they choose not to come, which is OK," Wommack said. "If you don't think you can play here, then you shouldn't come play at Alabama."
Heading into his third program in three seasons, Calhoun, Wommack said, has that personality trait, one that is vital for success with the Crimson Tide.
"Cam walked in the door with the mentality that he belonged at Alabama," Wommack said. "And typically, to me, those are the guys that will be successful here."
