DeepL's new AI agent can do 'nearly any task a human can' at computer
Translation software company DeepL has unveiled an autonomous AI agent designed to handle and automate various workflows that are currently carried out by humans in desktop jobs.
The so-called DeepL Agent is designed to operate entirely within each user's digital environment and respond to natural language commands to execute complex workflows securely and independently, the German company said, announcing the feature on Wednesday.
DeepL says the tool can understand, process and carry out a wide range of tasks by using virtual versions of standard tools like keyboards, mice and a browser. Through these existing interfaces, it can handle desktop tasks on behalf of the user.
"It can handle nearly any task a human can do with computer systems, moving seamlessly across users' tools and workflows and continually improving its performance over time," said the company's chief executive and founder, Jaroslaw Kutylowski.
The agent, currently in beta testing and set to become widely available "in the coming months", is reportedly designed to support a variety of business sectors and use cases, notably areas like finance, sales, marketing, customer support and localization.
DeepL says it can independently gather insights for sales teams, automate invoice processing in finance departments and handle the translation and approval of documents for localization, Kutylowski said.
Kutylowski founded the company in 2017 as a competitor to services like Google Translate and has successfully established it in the market.
Since a second major funding round in May 2024, DeepL has been valued at $2 billion. However, Germany's most valuable AI start-up faces strong competition. Increasingly, users are turning to chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini for translation tasks.
DeepL says it is used by around 200,000 companies and government agencies, as well as millions of private customers, across 228 markets worldwide. The company now employs approximately 1,000 people.
