Accordning to Leica Rumors , Light Lens Lab is preparing to expand its growing lineup of apochromatic lenses, with reports suggesting that a new 50mm f/2 APO lens for Leica M-mount cameras is currently in development.

According to Leica Rumors, the upcoming optic is expected to arrive sometime in 2027, giving Leica rangefinder photographers another potentially exciting alternative to the German manufacturer's own premium glass.

For anyone familiar with Leica's legendary APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. , the prospect of another apochromatic 50mm lens is certainly interesting. APO lenses are designed to minimize chromatic aberration, delivering exceptional sharpness, contrast, and color accuracy, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. Leica has long been regarded as a benchmark in this area, but its lenses command some extraordinary prices, which makes the arrival of another manufacturer developing high-performance APO optics particularly appealing.

Light Lens Lab has already demonstrated its ambitions with the introduction of its 35mm f/2 Apochromatic lens, which features an advanced optical formula incorporating four aspherical elements and a floating lens group. That lens marked the beginning of a much larger project for the Chinese manufacturer, which has been steadily building a reputation for producing beautifully constructed, traditionally styled lenses inspired by some of photography's most celebrated optical designs. Its new APO series represents an interesting departure from recreating classic lenses, concentrating instead on developing original, high-performance optics.

The rumored 50mm f/2 is also expected to be one of several new additions to the company's apochromatic lineup, with reports suggesting that 28mm f/2, 75mm f/2, 90mm f/2, and even 135mm f/2 lenses could follow. That's an ambitious selection of focal lengths, and if Light Lens Lab can deliver the optical quality it is promising, it could become a serious contender in the premium manual-focus lens market. As someone who has spent years shooting with Leica cameras, I find this particularly exciting. More choice in the M-mount system is always welcome, especially when manufacturers are prepared to push optical performance rather than simply reproduce the character of vintage glass.

There is still plenty we don't know about the upcoming 50mm f/2 APO, including its optical construction, dimensions, weight, and, perhaps most importantly, its price. The company's existing 35mm f/2 APO starts at $2,099, so this certainly isn't a manufacturer exclusively targeting the budget end of the market. However, with Leica's own APO-Summicron commanding a considerably higher price, the prospect of a new 50mm APO alternative is something worth watching closely. Whether Light Lens Lab can genuinely challenge Leica's optical excellence remains to be seen, but 2027 is already shaping up to be an interesting year for M-mount photographers.
