Microsoft Eliminates Infamous Blue Screen of Death With Windows 11 Update

With its release of the update KB5062660 for Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft has killed the infamous Blue Screen of Death and changed it to the Black Screen of Death. Now, when your system crashes, you will see a black background with a brief error message. The familiar sad emoticon and QR code have been removed, and the message is only displayed briefly, usually for about two seconds, before the machine restarts.

For now, the update seems to be optional and must be installed manually. Users can find it via Windows Update or download it directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog, with options for both x64 and arm64 systems. Installing KB5062660 brings the system to Build 26100.4770 and displays a preview of features Microsoft says it will roll out broadly in August 2025, as reported by PCWorld.

Another big change is the addition of Recall for EU users. Recall is supposed to operate locally only, so users can block access to apps and websites of their choice or disable the feature entirely. The update also includes Quick Machine Recovery , which automatically recognizes and resolves widespread system issues using the Windows Recovery Environment. If a computer becomes unbootable, it attempts to restore the PC by downloading a repair patch.
