With an iridescent color scheme and a futuristic aluminum design, the Area-51 (starts at $1,999.99; $3,399.99 as tested) is Alienware's ode to its current brand identity and a showcase for what the best current mobile components can do. It's the brand's latest stab at a flagship high-end gaming laptop, taking cues from its modern M- and X-series laptops . And inside, it's a beast: Our review model has an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU, pushing fast frame rates in nearly every scenario at its native 1600p resolution.

Price aside, the biggest drawbacks here are the battery life—the Area-51 didn't hit even three hours in our battery rundown test—and the 7.5-pound weight for the laptop alone. These are likely deal breakers for commuters or travelers. But as a desktop replacement, this is one of the best-designed, highest-performing gaming laptops you can buy. The MSI Raider 18 HX AI remains our Editors' Choice for high-end gaming machines of the moment, but the Area-51's sleeker metal build and smaller footprint may win you over.

Components and Configurations: A Fighter-Class Flagship

As we learned when we first saw it at CES 2025, the Area-51 is Alienware's new halo product—the laptop that sits at the top of the stack to show the best of what the brand can do. Worth noting up front: This laptop comes in models with 16- and 18-inch displays; I'm addressing the 16-inch one in this review. The larger version will have different pricing and performance. More reasonably priced gaming laptops are available at either size, but as stated above, this is the true premium machine in Dell's gaming lineup. The components ultimately make the laptop, and Alienware did not hesitate to reach the current parts ceiling.

That all means a high starting price out of the gate: The $1,999.99 base model comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255HX processor, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 GPU. Outside of the core parts, that model includes a 240Hz, 1600p display with G-Sync support and a standard per-key RGB keyboard. If that configuration sounds pricey to you for that particular graphics chip, I agree. But as we'll touch on, this laptop is about more than the core components. A lot more factors into the price beyond those parts, but on paper, it's an expensive RTX 5060-level system.

For this review, however, Dell sent a higher-end configuration that dodges the issue of the base model's value. For a (hearty but not unjustifiable) $3,399.99 list price, our model comes with a Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, 32GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, and an RTX 5080 GPU. The laptop is on sale at the time of writing, so these list prices may be lower when you're shopping, but know that sales come and go.

If I'm spending $2,000 or more on a gaming laptop, I'd like to see at least an RTX 5070 Ti, so I'd recommend looking beyond the RTX 5060 if you're considering the base model. Our RTX 5080, meanwhile, will be much more capable—I'll run through the results in the testing section below. The keyboard in our unit is also an upgrade to a low-profile Cherry MX mechanical keyboard (more on that later, too).

The last time Alienware relaunched the Area-51 laptop, the main draw was that it used a fully desktop-class chip—an unusual offering. In theory, this allowed users to upgrade their processor down the line rather than requiring a full laptop replacement when the chip aged. It didn't pan out that way in execution, however, and the feature ultimately landed Dell in legal trouble . These more standard Core Ultra mobile laptop chips avoid this quagmire entirely, leaving that sort of experience to vendors like Framework . The Area-51 uses a laptop-grade, non-swappable CPU and makes no claim to graphics upgradability.

Design: A Space-Age Look and Feel

Dell's halo-product approach applies to the design just as much as the components. Any high-end gaming laptop can be expensive and powerful simply by packing the latest top-end parts, but the style and build set this system apart.

The new Alienware look starts with the unique exterior finish, a dark but iridescent blue tint with an unusually soft touch for aluminum. It's subtle enough at a glance to blend in, but it's attractive and fits the Alienware brand quite well. (I can't say I've seen a laptop before with this kind of finish, and I've seen more than my share!) However, this material contributes to an overall heavy weight for the screen size; this is not a very portable system, at 7.49 pounds. (The charger is an additional 2.2 pounds.)

Adding to the futuristic look is plenty of customizable lighting across the chassis, set to light blue by default. The major attraction is the semi-translucent rear block, through which you can see a softly glowing RGB strip. Most recent Alienware laptops featured a similar rear thermal block, where most of the cooling and ports reside, but this see-through material with a soft internal glow is a new look, and I like the execution.

Aside from the headphone jack on the left edge,  all  ports are located on the rear block of this system. Turning the laptop around or looking over the screen to plug in accessories can be slightly inconvenient, but it's ultimately not a big deal. (On the upside, the port placement keeps your desk clear of cables if you use a mouse alongside.) You'll find plenty of connections back there, including three USB Type-A ports, two USB Type-C ports, an HDMI connection, and the power jack.

The touchpad also glows in one color across its entire surface, which is not a first for Alienware laptops but adds to that sci-fi aesthetic. Finally, and less immediately visible, you'll find a glass window on the underside of the chassis, through which you can see a pair of glowing fans. This fan lighting is also visible from the top side, through the ventilation grille above the keyboard.

The bottom window panel also serves a functional purpose. It's raised slightly, bumping the base of the laptop off whatever surface it's on to allow for better air intake with the added clearance. Alienware claims this design increases airflow, reduces noise, and enhances performance.

In terms of feel and style, the more luxe aluminum material, cool colorway, glowing rear block, and underside window all contribute to this system's place as a premium laptop—and to that high price. The heavily stylized aesthetic decisions may not be for everyone, but I think the overall laptop maintains a restrained enough look, and it's OK to have some fun with a gaming machine. The lighting is all customizable within the Alienware Command Center software. At the same time, a helpful physical stealth mode key in the function row turns off the chassis lighting for a more undercover appearance.

Display, Keyboard, and Touchpad: Sky-High Quality

The construction quality of all these aspects contributes to the premium feel. The aluminum body feels sturdy and high-end, and the touchpad is smooth and responsive. The optional Cherry MX mechanical keyboard in our model, though, is the no-doubt highlight.

Typing on this keyboard is incredibly satisfying. The keys produce tactile feedback and an enjoyable click, which makes me want to keep finding a reason to use them. I think the additional $50 for this keyset is well worth the outlay.

The display, meanwhile, does its part for a fancy gaming laptop. The 1600p resolution looks sharp, and the screen (officially rated at 500 nits) is bright. It has a matte finish, which doesn't completely cut down on glare. But it is far less reflective than a glass or glossy panel, like I recently saw on the glare-prone Razer Blade 16 . The screen color and vibrancy don't pop in the same way that a glossy screen might, but I'd make this trade-off for better visibility. The 240Hz refresh rate and G-Sync compatibility are a treat across various gaming genres.

Performance Testing: Reaching Rarefied Air

To gauge this system's exact performance level, I ran it through our usual benchmark suite and compared the results against the following high-end laptops.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 ($2,299.99 as tested) is the one system here firmly below the Area-51 in on-paper power, with its RTX 4070 in a thin chassis. From there, the HP Omen Max 16 ($3,509 as tested) and Razer Blade 16 ($4,499.99 as tested) are high-end RTX 50 series-based alternatives, while the MSI Raider 18 HX AI ($3,999 as tested) shows what a larger 18-inch laptop can do with the same GPU.

Productivity and Content Creation Tests

Our primary overall benchmark, UL's PCMark 10, puts a system through its paces in productivity apps ranging from web browsing to word processing and spreadsheet work. PCMark's Full System Drive subtest measures a PC's storage throughput.

Three more tests are CPU-centric or processor-intensive: Maxon's Cinebench 2024 uses that company's Cinema 4D engine to render a complex scene; Primate Labs' Geekbench 6.3 Pro simulates popular apps ranging from PDF rendering and speech recognition to machine learning; and we see how long it takes the freeware video transcoder HandBrake 1.8 to convert a 12-minute clip from 4K to 1080p resolution.

These results show, in no uncertain terms, that this laptop and its processor are ready to tear through office and multimedia workloads. It posted the highest result on PCMark 10's productivity test and found itself behind only the larger 18-inch system on any other test. Many shoppers likely want this machine primarily for gaming. Still, for the cross-section of users who want to edit media and crunch other demanding workloads, the Area-51 is more than capable.

Graphics and Gaming Tests

We challenge all systems' graphics with a quartet of animations or gaming simulations from UL's 3DMark test suite. Wild Life (1440p) and Wild Life Extreme (4K) use the Vulkan graphics API to measure GPU speeds. Steel Nomad's regular and Light subtests focus on APIs more commonly used for game development, like Metal and DirectX 12, to assess gaming geometry and particle effects. We also turn to 3DMark's Solar Bay to measure ray tracing performance in a synthetic environment.

Our real-world gaming testing comes from in-game benchmarks within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and F1 2024. These three games—all benchmarked at the system's full HD (1080p or 1200p native) resolution—represent competitive shooter, open-world, and simulation games, respectively. If the screen is capable of a higher resolution, we rerun the tests at the QHD equivalent of 1440p or 1600p. Each game runs at two sets of graphics settings per resolution for up to four runs total on each game.

We run the Call of Duty benchmark at the Minimum graphics preset—aimed at maximizing frame rates to test display refresh rates—and again at the Extreme preset. Our Cyberpunk 2077 test settings aim to push PCs fully, so we run it on the Ultra graphics preset and again at the all-out Ray Tracing Overdrive preset without DLSS or FSR. Finally, F1 represents our DLSS effectiveness (or FSR, on AMD systems) test, demonstrating a GPU's capacity for frame-boosting upscaling technologies.

Unsurprisingly, the RTX 5080 is an amazingly capable gaming GPU by any objective measure, pushing above 60 frames per second (fps) even at 1600p in almost all scenarios. We expect the Cyberpunk Ray-Tracing Overdrive setting to be too much for virtually any laptop without the help of DLSS. As you can see, all of these potent machines struggled on that test, but it's a decent measure of where raw GPU power stands—especially as DLSS makes generational improvements murkier. The Call of Duty results demonstrate the sky-high frame rates you can expect to see in competitive multiplayer games (many of them less visually demanding than CoD) using the high-refresh-rate screen.

In summary, the Area-51 can push more than 60fps in nearly any modern game at maximum visual settings, barring natively rendered, heavily ray-traced scenarios. This machine is right up there with any other high-end system here, including the larger-bodied MSI Raider. In fact, it shows the value of firsthand testing and not basing your graphics-performance expectations on GPU name alone: In several areas, the Area-51 matched or outperformed the RTX 5090-bearing HP Omen Max 16 and Razer Blade 16. This is no underdog story—this laptop is also expensive—but it's not a case of style over substance, either. This Area-51 configuration can punch upward into the next performance class under certain circumstances.

Battery Life and Display Tests

We test each laptop's battery life by playing a locally stored 720p video file (the open-source Blender movie Tears of Steel ) with display brightness at 50% and audio volume at 100%. We make sure the battery is fully charged before the test, with Wi-Fi and keyboard backlighting turned off.

To gauge display performance, we use a Datacolor SpyderX Elite monitor calibration sensor and its Windows software. With it, we measure a laptop screen's color saturation—what percentage of the sRGB, Adobe RGB, and DCI-P3 color gamuts or palettes the display can show—and its 50% and peak brightness in nits (candelas per square meter).

As positive as the other results were, battery life is one area where this laptop fell hopelessly short. Gaming laptops aren't exactly expected to last long off the charger (even while not gaming), but their stamina has improved, on average, over the years. As with the Omen Max 16, this laptop's battery harkens back to when sub-three-hour runtimes were the expectation, which is not a positive. Plan to plug in this laptop before long if you take it on the road—mind you, not that it's great for using at a cafe or on a plane, given the weight.

The screen-test results were much more impressive, with broad color coverage and high brightness ratings. The peak brightness score we recorded is even higher than Dell's stated rating of 500 nits.
