Backrooms Level X Turns Liminal Space Horror Into A Labyrinth Of Survival

Backrooms Level X is a first person narrative survival horror game from solo developer José Manuel Conesa and publisher Firenut Games that leans fully into the viral Backrooms mythos. Instead of action heavy combat, it focuses on oppressive atmosphere, slow exploration and the unsettling feeling of being lost in a place that should not exist. You wake up after a freak accident and find yourself trapped in an endless maze of yellow carpet, buzzing lights and empty rooms where logic stops making sense and something is always watching.

Backrooms Level X frames its horror around a strange event recorded on VHS in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1986. The marketing describes how this incident was captured on tape and then disappeared, only to resurface through the events of the game. From there you are dropped into the Backrooms, a place that stretches on as far as you can walk, full of liminal spaces that look like forgotten offices, corridors and storage areas frozen in time.

The game builds on the internet creepypasta that turned The Backrooms into a modern urban legend, focusing less on jumpscare spam and more on the anxiety of wandering through familiar but wrong spaces. Flickering fluorescent lights, humming air conditioning and distant footsteps stand in for a traditional soundtrack, while environmental storytelling hints at what the facility was and why people disappeared into it. Recent previews also note direct inspiration from the horror film Longlegs and reference a "prison planet" style theory to explain why this purgatory exists at all.

From PC Release To Expanded Console Version

Backrooms Level X first launched on PC via Steam in late May 2025, where it drew attention for its mix of liminal horror, straightforward objectives and accessible price point. It later received significant updates, including a full Spanish voice dub with well known dubbing actors and additional technical improvements.

In February 2026 the game arrived on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, with this console edition billed as an expanded version that adds new levels, mechanics and refinements over the original PC release. The official descriptions now talk about more than fifteen areas to explore, as well as varied environments and boss encounters meant to keep each run feeling fresh.

The result is a small but focused horror experience for players who enjoy the uncanny mood of liminal spaces. Backrooms Level X does not try to be the definitive Backrooms game. Instead, it offers a tight, self contained descent into a VHS flavored nightmare, where every corridor looks the same and every echo might mean something is finally closing in.
