Crisol: Theater of Idols Brings Blood, Folklore, and Horror to Six One Indie
At the Six One Indie Showcase, Crisol: Theater of Idols took center stage as one of the standout horror titles. Developed by Vermila Studios and published by Blumhouse Games, it invites players into a twisted version of Spain—Hispania—where religion and nightmare merge into a gruesome tapestry of cults and blood rites.
You play Gabriel, a soldier tasked with a divine mission from the Sun God. The twist? Your weapon is your own blood. As weapons lack conventional ammunition, reloading depletes your health—forcing a delicate balance between aggression and survival. Tormentosa, the cursed island setting, is steeped in twisted lore—puppet-like idols, saints brought to life, and cruelty hidden beneath architectural beauty.
What emerged in previews was a game with familiar lineage—think BioShock style gloom and Resident Evil tension—but with its own distinct twist. A feature preview described how every shot feels consequential: missing or overextending comes with real risk because healing and ammo sources are sparse. One particularly haunting adversary introduced in previews is Dolores, a massive, relentless pursuer who transforms sections of the game into cat-and-mouse sequences.
In interviews at the Showcase, creative director David Ternero explained how the concept was born from walking past Spanish churches and statues during Holy Week—a fascination with religious iconography twisted by horror. He described Hispania as both familiar and uncanny, layered with folkloric roots and reimagined traditions.
A demo version is already available on Steam, featuring blood mechanics, rebalancing, localization improvements, and new animations. While Crisol has no confirmed release date yet, its pitch—guns fueled by your life force, a haunting Iberian nightmare, and cultic mysteries—makes it one of the more audacious horror projects to emerge from this year's indie showcases.
