Open-source coding projects are being inundated with vibe-coded AI slop , and the team behind the Godot game engine's GitHub are asking for help. They're drowning in pull requests that are time consuming to sift through, and often unhelpful to the project, PCGamer reports .

The whole purpose of open-source software is to allow the wider global community of developers to altruistically contribute to the project. They might fork it to turn it into something else, but it's about the collaborative effort. That effort also requires maintainers to ensure the code being submitted is up to scratch, and it's not going well in the age of AI.

"Honestly, AI slop [pull requests] are becoming increasingly draining and demoralizing for #Godot maintainers," developer and Godot maintainer Rémi Verschelde posted on Bluesky .

Pull requests on GitHub are proposals to merge code changes into a project. They typically require a maintainer to go through the documentation and observe the code itself, so AI-powered pull requests from inexperienced or rushed coders are creating a huge time sink for those trying to manage it. Descriptions can lack precision or fail to make it clear what portion of the code was hand-written or at least, human-edited.

"Did they test it?" Vershelde asks in one post. "Are the test results made up?"

If code is poorly written, was it an inexperienced coder who might need advice to improve the submission, or was it spat out by an AI? How do they diagnose that, if the author claims to have written the code themselves, but used AI to write the description because they're not strong at English. Does the AI understand the code that they wrote?

In a somewhat sad conclusion to their story, Vershelde simply states: "Maintainers spend a lot of time assisting new contributors to help them get PRs in a mergeable state. I don't know how long we can keep it up."

This problem is also affecting Blender and bug bounty programs like that used by cURL , which are becoming almost unworkable. Now when a prize goes up, vibe coders can pitch multiple potential fixes generated by AI, hoping that something lands. Not respecting the fact that a real person will need to go through those rushed entries, despite the submitters themselves often having no idea if the fix works, or even how it might work.

Suggested solutions include AI automated code reviews, but most maintainers don't want to feed the AI machine. Instead they're calling for more funding to help pay more maintainers. Others are suggesting moving away from GitHub, a Microsoft-owned property. Regardless of the solution, it appears as if AI is ruining one more thing. Add it to the list.
