Indie developer Heavy Lunch Studio has announced that its debut title, Hermit and Pig , will launch on January 22, 2026, for PC and Mac via Steam. The reveal was accompanied by new game footage showcased during the latest Six One Indie Showcase, giving players a deeper look at this quirky, heartfelt RPG.

Described as a modern twist on the retro pixel art adventure RPG, Hermit and Pig blends the offbeat humor of Earthbound with fresh mechanics. Players will explore a surreal, mushroom-filled world as a reclusive hermit and his loyal truffle-hunting pig, embarking on a journey that is equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and strange.

Gameplay With a Twist

Instead of leaning on traditional RPG grinding, Hermit and Pig encourages skillful play and emotional storytelling through its unique systems:

• Key-Combo Combat: Inspired by Street Fighter and Paper Mario , battles require players to input timed combos that grow more complex over time.

• Conversation Battles: Hermit's social anxiety becomes a mechanic, turning awkward NPC encounters into "cringe damage" duels that players must navigate.

• Mushroom Foraging: Collect dozens of real and fantastical mushroom types to heal, attack, trade, or inflict status effects. Truffles serve as a key in-game currency.

• Leaving the Comfort Zone: Face off against corporate henchmen, strange cultists, rival truffle hunters, and hostile woodland creatures while chasing the legendary giant mushroom.

Story and Setting

The game begins when a girl from a nearby town asks Hermit and Pig for help. The town's factory has mysteriously replaced its workers with shady newcomers, threatening the community's survival. To save the townspeople from hunger, Hermit and Pig set off in search of a mythical mushroom, unaware that others are after it too.

Since its debut during the Future of Play Direct in 2023, Hermit and Pig has appeared at major events including Future Games Show, Day of the Devs, Wholesome Games, EGX, Dreamhack, and Magfest. Now, players can finally experience the adventure themselves.
