Mario Tennis Fever: Serving Up Something New on Switch 2

Nintendo has officially revealed Mario Tennis Fever, the next entry in the long-running Mario Tennis franchise, during its September 2025 Nintendo Direct. The game is set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on February 12, 2026, and is loaded with features that lean into special "Fever" mechanics, expanded character roster, and fresh game modes.

One of the standout additions in Mario Tennis Fever is the introduction of Fever Rackets. Each racket has a built-in "Fever gauge" which, once filled, allows the player to unleash powerful special shots. Examples shown in the reveal include the Flame Racket, Ice Racket, Mini Mushroom Racket, and Shadow Racket—each with unique effects like freezing parts of the court or shrinking opponents. 

Alongside the new equipment, the game boasts 38 playable characters, the largest roster in Mario Tennis history. Familiar faces like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Pauline, and more are confirmed. 

Modes & Motion, Babies & Bosses

The reveal also showed off a variety of modes that aim to mix competitive play with single-player fun:

• Tournament, Trial Towers, Mix It Up modes are returning or newly designed. In "Mix It Up" mode, features like Wonder Flowers add chaotic elements. 

• Online Room and Online Ranked modes are included for multiplayer competition. 

• A new Adventure Mode was unveiled where the characters are transformed into babies by a mysterious force. Players will relearn how to play tennis through an overworld, minigames, and boss battles in this mode. 

• Motion controls are supported through a "Swing Mode," using the Joy-Con 2. 

What This Means For Mario Tennis Fans

Mario Tennis Fever seems to lean more toward spectacle and variety than just refinement. The Fever Racket system suggests matches could become much more dynamic (and chaotic), depending on how powerful those special shots get. The inclusion of a large character roster plus new equipment means lots of options, customization, and hopefully diverse strategies.

The Adventure Mode, especially with its baby versions of the characters, suggests Nintendo is also trying to add more narrative or charm beyond just competitive tennis. For longtime fans of Mario Tennis Aces (2018), this will be a chance to see how the series evolves, especially on the newer hardware of Switch 2. 

Overall, Mario Tennis Fever looks like a promising reboot (or re-serve) for the series. The Fever Rackets are the headline mechanic, but the expanded roster, mode variety, and new Adventure content could make this one of the more memorable Mario Tennis entries. Success will depend on how well the special-racket balance is handled and whether the new modes offer lasting fun beyond the initial novelty.
