Microsoft Releases Emergency Windows 11 Update to Fix Game Crashes Linked to Easy Anti-Cheat

Microsoft has released an emergency update for Windows 11 24H2 to fix an issue that caused PCs to crash and restart when playing certain games. The problem was linked to Easy Anti-Cheat, a tool used by many online games, such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, and ELDEN RING, to stop players from cheating.

After installing a recent Windows update, KB5060842, users found their computers would suddenly restart or show a blue error screen, often called the "blue screen of death" or BSOD, which would soon  turn black . The error messages mentioned files like ntoskrnl.exe or EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe, as reported by Bleeping Computer.

Microsoft says the emergency update KB5063060 fixes this issue. The update is being automatically sent to computers with Easy Anti-Cheat installed and to those who have yet to install the earlier Windows 11 update that caused the issue. Users who cannot get the update through the usual Windows Update process can download and install it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

The company also blocked upgrading to Windows 11 24H2 for certain computers using newer Intel processors because these systems were more likely to have problems with Easy Anti-Cheat.

The emergency update also includes all the security fixes from the original June 2025 update . These fixes address 66 security problems, including 10 big issues that could let attackers take control of unprotected PCs or gain higher access than they should.
