NBA 2K26 Players Sound Off: Defense, VC Costs, and Bugs Lead Early Complaints

NBA 2K26 shows improvements, but defense, VC grind, and bugs are driving early player backlash

While 2K26 is definitely a step up in the franchise, and you can feel it the second the ball tips. Movements feels smoother, improved dribbling, and the presentation makes every game feel closer to a live broadcast. The excitement was real at launch — fans rushing in to test out new builds and modes — but it didn't take long before the honeymoon ended. As always, the community is quick to celebrate what works and tear apart what doesn't.

One of the loudest complaints centers around the contest system. Even players with maxed-out defensive builds have reported that closing out on shooters feels pointless, with green shots falling at alarming rates.

As one fan put it,  'I can't block or contest a thing… unless you actually jump, you won't contest.'  Others noted,  'Even with 92 perimeter defense, the contest system is broken.'  Steals and blocks are similarly inconsistent, leaving many in the community questioning whether defense has been left behind in favor of offense-heavy gameplay.

Adding to that frustration is the ongoing debate around VC. Players are once again voicing their anger at how much virtual currency is required to build a competitive character. One post summed it up bluntly:  'Who's ready to pay $100 for the game and $100 for VC and then stop playing two weeks later?'  Some fans argue that the grind is steeper than ever, while others flat-out call the model pay-to-win. It's an issue that's plagued the franchise for years, and 2K26 doesn't appear to have changed the formula.

Finally, bugs and cross-play limitations round out the list of concerns. Broken social menus and inconsistent matchmaking have made it difficult for players to link up with friends across platforms. One frustrated player described the error message in The Theater simply as,  'Event has ended.'  For all the progress made in polish and presentation, the lingering problems remind players that NBA 2K26, while a step up, is only the beginning — and we can expect to see a number of patches to address any concerns.
