Nintendo Reveals Timing of Switch 2 Direct Event
The Nintendo Switch has been a huge success by any measure, surpassing 150 million total sales just this month. Nintendo might not move many more Switches, though. With the Switch 2 now official, gamers will probably hold off until they can pick up Nintendo's new console. We're still missing myriad details on the Switch 2, but we do finally know when the mysteries will be solved: Nintendo is planning its Switch 2 Direct event for April 2, 2025.
Nintendo now has a landing page for Switch 2 Direct . You might not find it convenient to watch live, though. Nintendo says the stream will begin at 6 a.m. PDT on April 2. That's 10 p.m. in Nintendo's home market of Japan and early to mid-afternoon in Europe.
The Switch 2 leaked numerous times throughout 2024 , but Nintendo finally took the wraps off last month. That is, it showed us the console's design with a flashy animation of the Switch transforming into the Switch 2. From what we've seen so far, the Switch 2 will be a slightly larger, more mature console. The Joy-Cons are black, with the iconic red and blue colors now relegated to accents. There's also a mysterious new button on one of the controllers, and the kickstand is much larger and more adjustable. There are also hints the Joy-Cons could act as a mouse in some games.
Despite running on a decade-old Arm processor, the original Switch has been able to run games with surprising visual fidelity. The Switch 2 is believed to run on an updated Nvidia Tegra Arm processor , which will offer much higher performance. Although, it probably won't reach the level current-gen consoles, even the modest Xbox Series S.
The Switch 2 Direct event will likely include a release timeline, as well as pricing. We also expect some early game reveals to go along with early confirmations like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and the new Pokémon Legends. The internet seems to expect a new Mario Kart launch title, but that's still just speculation.
The Switch 2 has big shoes to fill. The Switch is Nintendo's best-selling console since the Nintendo DS, which ended its run with 154 million sales. The Switch will probably end just shy of that number, but Nintendo often has trouble maintaining momentum after a big success. Who can forget the disastrous Wii U era that came after the Wii became a legitimate cultural phenomenon?
