The next set of mainline pocket monster games--Pokemon Winds and Waves--have been officially revealed during today's Pokemon Presents livestream , and they will launch worldwide in 2027 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.

The announcement trailer for the tenth generation of Pokemon games unveiled multiple biomes in the new unnamed region, including tropical beaches with palm trees, rugged cliffsides with massive windmills, and more. The trailer also teased underwater exploration, which would be a first for a mainline Pokemon game.

We also got to meet the starter Pokemon for this new generation: Grass-type Browt, Fire-type Pombon, and Water-type Gecqua. Browt is a small bird with pronounced eyebrows, Pombon is a small dog with a large tuft of hair around its face, and Gecqua is a blue gecko with large (and adorable) eyes.

Following the release of new mainline Pokemon games every three years since 2010, this run ended following the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Switch in 2022. While the game was praised for its open-world design, frictionless gameplay, and vibrant additions to the Pokemon ecosystem, it was also heavily criticized for its poor technical performance on Switch.

Switch 2 owners got a free update for the games in 2025, but during those years when Scarlet and Violet were active, players called upon Nintendo and The Pokemon Company to give developer Game Freak more time to work on new mainline entries.

The studio has been busy as of late, as between an almost annual release cadence of new Pokemon games, it has also continued to expand on entries in the series with DLC expansions. Game Freak is also launching a non-Pokemon game later this year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, the "one-person, one dog" action-RPG Beast of Reincarnation .
