Silent Planet: Elegy Of A Dying World Delivers Cosmic Horror Metroidvania In 2027

Silent Planet: Elegy Of A Dying World is an exploration focused gothic sci fi metroidvania from Canadian indie studio Vertex Zero, published by Red Dunes Games. You control Apranik, a lone operative sent to the planet Thulcandra in the year 2997 to recover the Angel's Egg, an ancient artifact believed to be the source of all life in the universe. The mission quickly becomes a descent through a vast underground complex built by a dead civilization, packed with techno organic abominations and lingering cosmic dread.

Silent Planet takes place on a world that is literally falling apart after a planetary scale catastrophe. Apranik's search for the Angel's Egg leads her into a megastructure that was once conceived as salvation and now serves as a tomb, with corridors choked by decaying biological growths and corrupted machinery. Environmental storytelling and scattered chronicles from an ancient alien race are designed to slowly reveal what happened to Thulcandra and why the Angel's Egg became central to its fate.

The developers describe the game as a love letter to classics like Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but filtered through a biopunk aesthetic that mixes flesh, rusted metal and occult symbolism. Apranik herself is positioned as a rare female lead in this space, drawing inspiration from characters such as Motoko Kusanagi and Ellen Ripley, and carrying a mix of resilience and melancholy that ties directly into the game's themes of loss, reincarnation and cosmic insignificance.

Exploration Focused Design And Weighty Combat

On the gameplay side, Silent Planet is built as a side scrolling 2D metroidvania with pixel art, gated exploration and a heavy focus on atmosphere. Steam lists tags such as Metroidvania, Pixel Graphics, Lovecraftian, Dark Fantasy and Female Protagonist, underlining how much the mood and tone matter alongside the action. Apranik uses a mix of melee and ranged psychokinetic weapons, with combat tuned around limited room space, deliberate timing and careful positioning rather than pure twitch dodging.

Vertex Zero has talked about two guiding principles for encounters: space and timing. Tight arenas emphasize reaction and movement, but the team also layers in RPG style progression so that smart builds and ability choices can compensate for weaker reflexes. Exploration is meant to feel methodical and rewarding. Players are encouraged to backtrack with newly acquired abilities, use an environmental scanning system to uncover hidden clues and interact with dynamic environments that can change based on their actions, opening shortcuts or revealing previously inaccessible areas.

A playable demo has already been shown at events such as Tokyo Game Show 2025, where attendees explored early areas of the underground complex and gave feedback on the combat pacing and exploration flow. With its focus on slow burn cosmic horror, a decaying alien world and a heroine bound to an ancient prophecy, Silent Planet is positioning itself as a character driven, lore rich metroidvania for players who want something darker and more introspective than a straightforward action platformer.
