Upgraded PSSR Debuts With Resident Evil: Requiem, Will Spread To Other Games Soon
Resident Evil: Requiem is out (look forward to our review soon), and early players have noticed one thing: it looks amazing on PlayStation 5 Pro. That's because Requiem is the first game to take advantage of an upgraded version of PSSR, the PS5 Pro-exclusive upscaler that uses machine learning to make low resolution images look crisp and crystal clear on a 4K TV.
In a PlayStation Blog post from Mark Cerny, he explains how PSSR has been upgraded thanks to a collaboration with AMD, known as Project Amethyst. Best of all, Resident Evil isn't the only game that will be able to take advantage of the new PSSR upgrade.

The idea behind PSSR is that it can use specialized tech to make a clearer, cleaner image without having to natively render every pixel. 4K images aren't cheap, and often come with compromise to framerate and graphical features. PSSR was developed to create a solution to that problem, allowing for 4K imagery on PS5 Pro without sacrificing in other areas. Think of it as the next-generation of 'checkerboard rendering' that was utilized by the PS4 Pro.
In practice, however, the original form of PSSR was a bit, shall we say, iffy. Some games, like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, looked amazing, but others, like Silent Hill F and Star Wars Jedi Survivor, had issues with flickering and visual noise. Simply put, some PS5 Pro games looked worse than their PS5 versions.
In March, multiple games will upgrade to the new version of PSSR, and the PS5 Pro itself will gain the option to use the enhanced PSSR on any PS5 Pro game that supports the upscaler. Once that happens, I'm sure we'll get a comprehensive comparison video from Digital Foundry to see just how much PSSR has improved since the launch of the PS5 Pro back in November of 2024.
So, if you've been looking to start one of the more problematic PS5 Pro games, maybe you're better off waiting for the update to drop in March. In the meantime, maybe try reading a book, nerd!
