Wait, Does God Of War: Sons Of Sparta Have Multiplayer Or Not?

Earlier this week, God of War: Sons of Sparta shadowdropped during Sony's State of Play presentation. Unfortunately, the game is now the center of a controversy about misleading marketing. When I reported on the game's release days ago, I mentioned that the game features two-player co-op. The game's PSN store listing mentioned co-op, and the trailers, which featured series protagonist Kratos and his brother, Deimos, looked like a perfect fit for multiplayer.

However, there is no multiplayer in the game... Kinda. The main story is single player only, and multiplayer is limited to a post-game challenge mode , which can be played solo or with a friend locally. This led to some confusion, and a bit of what I would argue is misleading marketing. Lots of 2D action games feature support for two-player multiplayer, and the trailer emphasizes the relationship between Kratos and his brother, Deimos. But multiplayer is not possible in the main story mode, just the post-game challenges.

Basically, it looks like a multiplayer game... But it's not. But then it is, but only after the main experience has concluded. Will there be consequences for this mistake? How many people bought the game hoping to play through the story with their multiplayer partner, only to be disappointed? How many couples were hoping to spend their Valentine's Day playing video games together but now have to kiss each other like a pair of dumb chumps?

Maybe this will blow over with little fanfare, but I can see a low-key class-action lawsuit springing from this. It's not a huge deal, but I imagine some customers felt like that they were led to believe that Sons of Sparta was a different game than what they bought and downloaded, and I bet a good lawyer could give them a little monetary justice. Or maybe Sony could relax their refund policy for people who bought the game with a multiplayer story experience in mind. That's probably the best option.
