Windows is getting automatic recaps for PC games

The next time you play a PC game, you might get a recap showing achievements, screenshots, and other game data after you're done. Microsoft is starting to test the feature on the Insiders channels, ahead of a wider rollout.

Microsoft announced in a blog post, "Starting today, Xbox Insiders in the PC Gaming Preview can try postgame recaps in the Xbox PC app on Windows. After you finish a play session, you may see a quick recap that highlights moments from that session—like captures you took, achievements you unlocked, and relevant in‑game events—plus an option to share feedback so we can keep improving the experience."

Microsoft didn't specify exactly how the feature works, other than it runs in the background while you play games, and you're more likely to see the recaps when you take a Game Bar capture or unlock an achievement. There's no stated requirement for a Copilot+ PC, so it's probably not using a generative AI model like Windows Recall .

The feature is intended to "minimize memory and performance impact." You'll be able to customize it from Settings > App > Postgame recaps.

The given example was a recap for Grounded 2, highlighting that the player earned multiple achievements "including a rare one," and the option to share the recap with friends in the Xbox app. If you were imagining a live sports-like video recap, it's not quite at that level.

I haven't seen a similar feature in other gaming platforms, so at least Microsoft is trying something new, even if it turns out to be unhelpful with wider rollouts. PlayStation consoles usually save screenshots or clips automatically when you get a trophy/achievement, but those aren't automatically opened when you close a game. The Xbox overlay in Windows already has background recording as an option , but the postgame recaps don't seem to be using those yet, even if you have background recording enabled.

Microsoft also said, "On your first time playing a game (and occasionally after that), you may also see a short check‑in and recommendations for other games you might enjoy. We'd love your feedback—tell us what you found helpful, what felt unnecessary, and what you'd like to see after future gaming sessions."

This feature also seems to only work for games using Xbox services, like the ones installed from the Microsoft Store or Xbox app, with achievements and Xbox multiplayer services. There's no mention of recaps for Steam, GOG, or Epic Store titles.

You can get access to this feature with the Xbox Insider Hub app . It should roll out to more Windows PCs once any bugs are worked out.
