? Thankfully, no: At least a few home security cameras let you pay once and be done. No ongoing charges for storage, package-detection, AI features or anything like that. And to that I say: hallelujah!
I tried outdoor cameras from Baseus, Eufy, Lorex and Tapo, all of them proudly subscription-free. They're ideal for monitoring and recording areas that a doorbell camera might miss: driveways, back yards, even just the entirety of your front porch. The catch is that recorded video has to get saved somewhere, so you'll need to supply a microSD card, which pops into the camera for local (as opposed to cloud) storage. As catches go, however, it's a pretty small one: You can get a 64GB card for around $15
, a 128GB card for $20
and so on.

Just $50 for a battery-powered, subscription-free security camera? Yep, and for just $10 more, you can get the SolarCam version — which comes with a solar panel. (At the time of this writing, that model was actually on sale for $10 less .)
Without the panel, you're looking at having to manually recharge the C402 every six months or so — not a huge hassle, but solar means manually recharging it never. Assuming you have a sun-accessible place to mount the camera, that's what I'd choose.
The included quick-start guide is excellent, at least with regard to charging, setting up and mounting the camera. (It doesn't cover actually using it.) One immediate nitpick, however: Although the status LED flashes briefly when you first start charging, it then goes dark and stays that way; there's no way to know when the camera is fully charged.
Meanwhile, although the Tapo app does a commendable job walking you through camera pairing and setup, I repeatedly received errors when trying to connect to my home Wi-Fi network. Thankfully, resetting my router (per a third-party YouTube video I found) resolved the issue.
Initial hiccups aside, the C402 performed well in all my tests, delivering a live feed within a few seconds and playing recorded videos almost instantly. The app is fairly intuitive overall, and I appreciate the inclusion of text labels for at least some (but not all, curiously) of the controls: Talk, Light, Alarm Off, etc.
I especially like Privacy Mode: With a single tap, it disables the camera, notifications, etc. — helpful when you're doing something within the camera's view and don't want to get bombarded with motion alerts. Similarly, you can set a "detection range" if you're getting too many alerts from far-away movement, like traffic in the street. There are, of course, custom activity and privacy zones you can configure as well — but this is the only camera that lets you create different zones for motion detection and person detection.
This is one of the few cameras that lets you specify a "retrigger time," the interval between event-triggered recordings — though it tops out at 60 seconds. Why not give the option for, say, a few minutes or even more?
Speaking of recordings, TP-Link does give you a cloud-storage option: Tapo Care for $34.99 annually. That nets you 30 days' worth of unlimited recording, along with Rich Notifications: thumbnail images attached to alert notifications, effectively giving you a preview of the event so you know at a glance if it's important. (Other cameras here provide that by default.) There are a few other perks as well, but to my thinking there's only one real advantage: Recordings that can't be stolen.
(For what it's worth, the federal and Texas governments have repeatedly accused TP-Link of having nefarious ties to the government of China. As with TikTok , that prompted the creation of a US-based sibling company with the same name. Until or unless the authorities share any hard evidence of real spying, however, I don't have any qualms buying TP-Link hardware.)
The bigger question might be whether you can live with the C402's 1080p resolution, the lowest in the group. It's fine for the areas close to the camera, but if you're trying to make out, say, the license plate of a car in the driveway, you'll have a harder time. In my setup — the camera pointed toward my front porch and walk — this resolution was more than sufficient.
Ultimately, the Tapo C402 is surprisingly good for the price, especially if you don't need the "distance viewing" afforded by a higher-resolution lens. And it's a no-brainer to choose the solar model for $10 more.

As a Eufy Video Doorbell user for the past couple years, I was already pretty familiar with the Eufy security ecosystem — and the SoloCam E30 made for a good, if slightly flawed, addition. It can not only pan a full 360 degrees, but also track people or vehicles as they go by. That gives you a longer recording and more opportunity to identify any criminals or criminal activity.
Eufy supplies a detailed quick-start guide that covers mounting options in great detail — though there's no information about actually using the camera. Within the app, however, voice-prompts help you get it connected, and there are even more detailed mounting instructions.
Speaking of which, I like that the solar panel can attach directly to the top of the camera or use an extension cable (provided) to mount elsewhere. That's great if you want the camera under an eave, for example, where there's little or no sun; you can position the panel above that eave to catch the necessary rays.
If you're concerned about camera theft and/or you want more than 128GB of storage (the maximum capacity supported by the camera itself), Eufy's optional HomeBase S380 base station keeps your microSD card (up to 1TB) safely tucked away indoors. It also amplifies your Wi-Fi and enables facial recognition.
In my tests, the E30 worked very well overall, usually establishing a live video feed in just a second or two (but with occasional delays of 10-20 seconds). And I was impressed at how quickly the camera followed a moving subject. You can manually pan or tilt the lens, of course, but there's also a nifty option that generates a panoramic image, then lets you tap anywhere on that image to quickly point the lens there.
The solar panel did an effective job keeping the camera at or near 100% charge, even during a long stretch of cold, cloudy days. But cryptic icons make it hard to tell if it's actively charging or what the current battery level is.
My larger usability complaint is the same as with my Eufy doorbell: You can't snooze motion alerts. They come at 30-second intervals, like it or not. That's super-annoying if, say, you're gardening in the front yard or talking to a neighbor outside your door. There should be quick, easy way to pause notifications for a set period.
I also wish the app didn't force you to scroll across two screens' worth of control icons when they can all easily fit on the same screen.
It wouldn't take much coding to solve both those problems, just saying. But even as it stands, the SoloCam E30 is a solid solar-powered camera that's reasonably priced and definitely a good choice if you need a maximum field of view.
(Note: I'm aware that Eufy cameras had notable security breaches in 2021 and 2022 . I don't consider that to be a dealbreaker for an outdoor camera, though any future repeat would give me pause.)

If you need a security camera someplace the sun don't shine (like under a shady tree — come on), look to this battery-free wired option: It plugs into an AC outlet, courtesy of a 10-foot power cord. Yes, that makes it subject to power failures, and a thief could easily disable it if the plug is accessible, like it is on my front porch. But in all other respects, this is one of the best subscription-free security cameras I tested.
It's also one of the most expensive, with a list price of $230 (though it yo-yos between that and $160). You do get a 32GB microSD card, so there's no added expense for storage, and this is the only camera here that supports newer, faster Wi-Fi 6.
That spec likely explains why the Lorex was consistently the fastest (and most reliable) at establishing a live feed; video appeared almost instantly. Same with recorded events; there was virtually no delay in starting playback. (Many other models, especially cheaper ones, rely on Wi-Fi 4 or 5.) And speaking of recorded video, it actually includes the few seconds before motion is registered, the better to give you a more complete clip. That's a magic trick no other camera here performs.
Unfortunately, Lorex provides very little help with mounting or camera setup, instead just directing you to the app. I was able to get connected easily enough, and there's nothing too tricky about mounting, but when you're paying a premium, I feel you should get a detailed print guide.
The app is very good overall, with text labels for most of the control icons and a number of features and settings not found elsewhere. For example, in addition to a one-tap privacy-mode toggle, which temporarily turns off monitoring, there's an alert-snooze option — great for when you're outside and don't want a non-stop barrage of notifications. Every security camera should have this feature; only this one (in our group. anyway) does.
I also liked the canned audio responses ("How can I help you," "Sorry, we can't come to the door right now," etc.) you can play through the camera's speaker, and the option to record custom ones as well.
I did note that certain motion-detection notifications (like for pets) were a little slower to arrive than with other cameras, and for some reason the package-detection toggle simply didn't work: Every time I enabled it, it turned itself back off again. At this writing I've yet to receive a response from Lorex regarding that glitch.
I wish the company offered a battery-powered version of this camera, and I also think the price feels a little high. But I can't argue with the features and performance, both of which are very good. If you need a wired camera, this is the one to get.

The Baseus S2 has an impressive trick up its sleeve — or, rather, on its lens: a solar panel that rotates up to 80 degrees across the barrel, the better to follow the sun and suck up more power.
That's on top of some solid specs, including a 4K lens, up to 512GB of local storage (via microSD card, not included) and radar-assisted passive-infrared (PIR) motion detection that runs the full gamut: faces, pets, etc. In fact, AI-driven facial recognition lets you whitelist up to 10 family members — great if you want to get alerted when, say, the kids get home from school.
Baseus supplies fairly minimal print instructions with annoyingly tiny print, but I had no trouble getting the camera mounted and paired with the Baseus Security app. The settings and controls in the latter are reasonably intuitive, with some useful how-to, FAQ and customer-service info readily available in the Service tab.
Because the solar panel is permanently attached to the camera, you have less flexibility with regard to placement: It has to be mounted somewhere that captures at least some sun while still pointing where you want camera coverage.
My preferred spot — at the far end of my porch, pointed toward my door — gets sun for about half the day. That's plenty to keep the battery topped off, but the auto-tracking setting posed a problem here: The solar panel followed the sun into a shaded area (under the porch eave), then failed to rotate back again for the next day. I only caught this because I noticed the battery gradually running out of charge.
There's an easy workaround — I disabled tracking and left the panel angled in one direction — but it does mean you can't take full advantage of sun-tracking if you're mounting in a partially shaded area. I should also note that when winter temperatures dropped below around 30 degrees, the camera stopped charging. According to Baseus, this is expected behavior: In extreme temps, "the solar charging efficiency can become unstable, and in some cases the device may temporarily stop charging as part of its battery protection mechanism."
In most other respects, the S2 worked more or less as it should: high-quality video, great field of view, plenty of ways to tweak the settings to your liking. I found I could access a live camera feed within just a few seconds, and recordings started within a second or two of motion detection.
However, there were times when the live feed and/or video playback were delayed, often for 10-20 seconds; occasionally they timed out and wouldn't play at all. But I've encountered this with other cameras as well, so the blame could fall to my Wi-Fi network or other factors.
I also noticed that when I set up a custom "activity zone" to eliminate unwanted notifications of street traffic, they still appeared whenever a car drove past. I had to "shrink" the zone further than seemed necessary to get this working properly. Meanwhile, there's a Vehicle Detection option in the settings — toggling this off didn't help with the aforementioned problem, but when it's on, even a parked car (like in the neighbor's driveway) generates an alert whenever other motion is detected.
Again, every camera I've tested has its foibles when it comes to motion detection and notifications. It takes tweaking to get things just right.
Assuming you can find a satisfactory sun-spot for the Baseus S2, I think this is a versatile, powerful, relatively easy security camera for a very reasonable price: $90 most of the time, with sporadic returns to the $130 list price.

How we tested outdoor security cameras
There are lots of variables that can affect security-camera performance, the biggest one being location: Because it relies on Wi-Fi for connectivity, you need to place it somewhere it can catch a good signal from your modem or router — which, of course, lives indoors. (See the FAQ section, below, for information on Wi-Fi range extenders.)
I live in a two-story suburban house with a covered front porch. To test each camera, I mounted it at the far end, about 15 feet from the front door. Then I angled it toward the door, allowing me to see not only the porch but also the walkway leading up to it. This gives me a side view of anyone who's approaching and an eagle-eye on any packages that have been delivered.

Why not mount it closer to the door so it's facing forward? That would cut packages out of the picture; they'd be too low, outside most cameras' field of view. And it wouldn't be exposed to sunlight; the farther spot is better for the solar panel to catch some rays.
This location also includes a view of the street, allowing me an additional test of the camera's motion-detection capabilities. I don't want a notification every time a car drives by, so could I filter those out?

FAQs
What do I need to know about security camera privacy?
It goes without saying that home-security cameras have been in the news a lot lately, from Ring's controversial Super Bowl ad to the Nest camera footage that law-enforcement used in the Nancy Guthrie case . The short answer: Yeah, there are privacy issues to consider.
There's always the chance a malicious hack or poor security protocols could provide third-party access to the camera, like the Eufy incident in 2021 or the multiple Wyze breaches in recent years. But because the recordings on the cameras reviewed here are in your home — not in a faraway data center "cloud" server — they at least feel a bit more cordoned off from the big bad internet. And maybe it's just me, but if someone happens to tap the feed of my front porch, that feels less invasive than, say, an indoor nanny cam in the baby's room.
Meanwhile, while law enforcement could always come knocking for video recordings, they will literally have to come knocking: Unlike Ring's cloud-connected systems that can be proactively shared with law enforcement, the options here are, again, all local to your home.
Ultimately, I think the benefits far outweigh the risks. The very presence of a security camera might be enough to dissuade a thief. And it's always good to know what's happening outside your home, especially when you're at work or on vacation.
How do I make sure I have a good Wi-Fi signal outside my house?
Easy: Install the Speedtest app (which is exactly what it sounds like) on your phone. Run it once inside your house to get a baseline measurement of Wi-Fi performance, then run it again outside, wherever you're planning to mount the camera.
You're specifically looking at upload speed: For a 1080p camera, it should be at least 2Mbps; 4K demands a minimum of 4Mbps. Higher numbers are definitely better for both.
For what it's worth, even if the Wi-Fi signal isn't great, the camera will still record perfectly good video. What make look glitchy when played back through your phone should be silky-smooth if you pop out the memory card and offload the videos to your PC.

What's the difference between cloud storage and local storage?
Very often, it's the difference between a subscription and no subscription. When a security camera records an event — say, a driver leaving a package at your door — that video clip has to get stored somewhere. Two options: It can get uploaded to the cloud (via your home Wi-Fi network) or it can get saved to a memory card inside the camera. (That's the "local" option.)
What's the advantage to using cloud storage, especially if it means paying a monthly fee? Often it provides faster access to your clips, as you're viewing them directly from an online server instead of waiting for a connection to your camera and waiting again for the clips to play from that memory card.
What's more, if someone steals your camera (something a crafty thief might well do), they're stealing your memory card as well — meaning goodbye, recordings.
That said, at least one of the options shown here — the Eufy — offers the option for an in-house base station. That means the recordings are still "local" (to your home), subscription-free — and remain in your possession, even if someone steals the external camera.
What does "subscription-free" mean for outdoor security cameras?
It means you're storing video recordings to a memory card that's inside the camera, not paying a monthly fee to store those recordings on a cloud service. Take note, however, that some security-camera subscriptions also provide added features, like package- and pet-detection or AI-powered facial recognition.
How much footage can subscription-free cameras store?
Storage capacity depends on the size of the microSD card and the camera's resolution — but variables like bitrate, compression and even frame rate often come into play as well. A 30-second recording at 4K resolution might require anywhere from 85-250MB of storage. If you have, say, a 32GB memory card, you could store well over 100 clips, minimum, before the older ones get deleted to make room for newer ones (which is what most cameras do once capacity is reached).
Depending on how much "traffic" your camera captures, that might represent days' or even weeks' worth of recordings.
