Is fast charging bad for your phone?
Fast chargers deliver on the promise of convenience, but do they come at a cost to long-term battery health?

I've always had a soft spot for old tech. My 30GB iPod Classic — may it rest in peace — used to double as a late-night movie theater when I was supposed to be asleep in high school. My first iPad came from my mom, who sold one of my saxophones to buy it while I was away at college (fair trade, honestly). And my first iPod Nano went everywhere with me, including all of my training runs leading up to qualifying for the national Olympic-distance triathlon championships in my early twenties (sorry, not sorry for the brag — it sounds way more impressive than it actually is).
I've been through more than two dozen phones and tablets since those first devices, and if there's one thing that always seems to give out first, it's the battery. Because of that, I've often found myself wondering whether fast charging , while convenient, is quietly killing my tech.

How phone batteries work
Your phone (and most, if not all, of the rechargeable devices you own) is powered by a lithium-ion battery, which is used because it holds a lot of energy in a small package and recharges pretty efficiently. But they do have a downside: hit them with too much heat or electrical stress and they degrade faster than they should.
That's where the idea that "fast charging is bad" comes from, and while it may have had some merit back in the early days of smartphones , today it's a completely different story.

Your phone controls how it is charged
Today's smartphones don't just passively sit on a charger and fill up their battery like a tank of gas. When your battery is low, your phone accepts a big rush of power to charge quickly, but once it reaches a certain level, i.e., around 80%, it slows down that charge in order to protect the battery. So even if you buy a 65-watt fast charger ( this Anker 3-in-1 is a personal favorite of mine ), your phone won't just recklessly gulp down all 65 watts worth until it is full like an uncle on Thanksgiving. It takes what it can handle, and no more.
If size matters to you, you can find fast chargers that you'll barely even notice in both 5,000mAh and 10,000 mAh sizes. This one is the latter, and can charge up your phone multiple times.
Then what does damage your phone's battery?
Heat. Specifically, sustained high temperatures , whether from charging, heavy use or sitting in a hot car.
So if you care about your battery, don't leave your phone charging in direct sunlight, don't charge it while it's stuffed under a pillow or sheets (as someone who routinely falls asleep listening to podcasts, I'm really bad about that one). Many phones have "Optimized Charging" or "Charging Limit" settings that cap overnight charging. Turn that on.
Another piece of advice? Stop leaving your phone plugged in all the time or letting it die completely. "One thing that degrades a battery's health is keeping it fully charged for long periods of time and repeatedly letting it get down to zero," says Yahoo Tech Senior Reporter Amy Skorheim . "Lithium-ion cells are under the least strain when their charge capacity is somewhere in the middle. So if you can help it, don't let your phone die before charging it up. And if you don't go through a full charge each day, you might take advantage of your device's charge limit features that stop charging your phone when it hits 80, 85, 90 or 95 percent. You can do this on iPhones , Pixels and Galaxy phones ."

TL;DR: Fast charging is not ruining your phone
Your phone is built to handle it. To keep your battery healthy, keep it away from heat. That means hot cars, direct sun and charging under your pillow or covers. And if your phone has an optimized overnight charging option, turn it on and forget about it. Otherwise, charge your phone however is most convenient for you. Don't overthink it.
