JustWatch, the search engine widely used to locate films and shows across services such as Disney Plus and Netflix, has introduced JustWatch TV. The debut moves the company into streaming for the first time. According to JustWatch, the service pairs a free ad-supported tier with an ad-free paid subscription and rentals, drawing on titles from 30 partners worldwide. It follows plans the company outlined last month.
Users reach the service through the company's existing mobile apps and website.
JustWatch says it has launched in 12 markets, among them the US, Canada, France, Italy, Australia, and the UK. Content comes from Bleecker Street, Cineverse, Fremantle, New Regency, and Paramount, along with region-specific partners around the world.
Sign-ups get a choice of three tiers, according to JustWatch. JustWatch TV Free offers a curated set of titles with ads. JustWatch TV Plus, the paid subscription, carries more than 300 ad-free titles and adds exclusive app tools, including the option to hide shows a user has disliked or already watched within the guide.
The JustWatch TV Store stocks a growing catalog of recent and popular films available to rent. That storefront launches only in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand to start.
JustWatch TV Plus costs $3.99 per month and throws in a 10 percent discount on rentals, according to JustWatch. The company says it is also running a limited-time $49.99 lifetime option. Even if its content prices rise, JustWatch argues the worth of the data it gathers will keep that lifetime option worthwhile, according to TechCrunch.
The move expands JustWatch beyond its role as a guide and search tool, placing it in direct competition with the ad-supported free services and rental storefronts it has long indexed.
By folding streaming, a paid tier, and rentals into apps consumers already use to track where titles live, the company adds viewing and rentals to tools that previously only pointed elsewhere. The lifetime option runs for a limited time, so readers weighing the $49.99 price against the $3.99 monthly subscription will want to act while it remains available.
