Royal Caribbean cuts comedy shows on two of its largest ships
Comedy shows have long been a staple of Royal Caribbean cruise entertainment, but as the cruise line evolves toward more high-tech spectacles, traditional stand-up sets are appearing less frequently on some of the line's newer, larger ships.
If late-night comedy shows are something you look forward to on a cruise, you'll want to take note. There are at least a couple of Royal Caribbean Icon- and Oasis-class ships that might not be the right fit for your next sailing.
Comedy shows are noticeably absent from Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas
Royal Caribbean's brand-new Legend of the Seas launched this summer with an enormous entertainment lineup — an "America's Got Talent" stage show, a Broadway-style production of Roald Dahl's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," an aerial and high-diving AquaTheater show called Shockwave, a fast-paced ice-skating performance, and more.
But what it doesn't have, according to Royal Caribbean Blog's Matt Hochberg , who sailed on the ship twice this summer and combed through its full entertainment schedule, is a single comedy show for adults or families.
"The brand-new ship has no shortage of things to do, and you'll find a show, activity, or event happening almost every hour of the day," Hochberg wrote, noting that it "felt strange" not to have a single comedy show on a Royal Caribbean cruise.
Hochberg, who's been cruising with Royal Caribbean regularly for more than 20 years, missed catching a comedy show during his sailings — something he said he enjoys as a way to experience something he rarely does on land. It's the same for me as a frequent family cruiser. I enjoy stand-up comedy, but I'm much more likely to go to a comedy show when I'm on a cruise than I am during a night out back at home.
Hochberg decided to investigate the entertainment shake-up and reached out to Royal Caribbean to see if Legend might add comedy shows when it begins sailing Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale, Florida this fall.
"Comedy on our ships is itinerary and ship dependent," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Hochberg. "Legend of the Seas will have comedy acts on the transatlantic sailing and future acts in the America's Got Talent LIVE on Stage show may include comedy as well."

An Oasis-class ship dropped its adult comedy show
Hochberg also reported that Allure of the Seas recently stopped offering an adult comedy show on board. A Royal Caribbean Blog reader wrote to the fan blog to share an email they received from a representative aboard the ship that stated that "Allure of the Seas no longer offers a dedicated Adult Comedy show."
Comedy shows had previously been included on the entertainment schedule for the main theater on board, after the cruise line did away with the dedicated comedy clubs on most Oasis-class ships in order to add more non-smoking casino space.
Similarly, the new Legend of the Seas doesn't have a comedy club either. Where sister ships Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas each have The Attic comedy club, Legend has Royal Railway – Legend Station , a new specialty dining venue in that space instead.

While this isn't a fleetwide change, it's worth factoring in if you're someone who wants to see a stand-up comedy show during your vacation.
