If beach towns are known for their boardwalks, seafood shacks, and sandy shores, lake towns play the perfect foil. They have a similar laid-back lifestyle, albeit with calmer waters, dockside sunsets, and, usually, fewer crowds. While every lake town has its own appeal and personality, there are a few that stand out for their scenery—think glittering bodies of water, quaint main streets, mountain backdrops, and photo-ready marinas.

Although it would be nearly impossible to include all of the gorgeous lake towns in the U.S., we narrowed down our list to just 10. Below, several travel experts weigh in on the most beautiful lake towns in the U.S.

You may have heard about the incredible skiing in Whitefish , but this Montana town also shows off in the warmer months. "Whitefish has a way of surprising people. I recently watched two separate bachelorette parties visiting Montana for the first time strike up a conversation outside the iconic Great Northern Bar , and they were equally in awe of the town's energy," says Sarah Martin, a ThirdHome travel ambassador. "Spend the day at the lake and head downtown for dinner and you'll quickly understand why so many visitors end up planning their next trip before they leave." Whether you prefer fishing, paddleboarding, waterskiing, Jet Skiing, or good old-fashioned swimming, you can do it all on Whitefish Lake, a stunning five-square-mile freshwater lake surrounded by the Northern Rockies.

Becca Mason, a senior product executive at tour operator Audley Travel , also recommends Whitefish, noting how easy it is to explore the mountain-and-lake town by bike. "Whitefish has a great selection of independent shops, boutiques, and art galleries in the central area. I'd suggest travelers stay for at least a couple of days; they can use it as a base to explore the wilderness of nearby Glacier National Park , too," she says.

If you take a road trip along the California portion of Highway 395 , you'll come across Lee Vining, a lake town just below the beautiful Tioga Pass. "Lee Vining on the southwest shore of Mono Lake is the ideal place to stop on the drive to Yosemite . This is where the landscape changes from desert to rolling mountains and forests, and it's a really beautiful, small, rustic town, giving pioneer vibes," says Mason. "Mono Lake is a large and highly salty lake, with limestone spires (tufa towers) rising from the water. The views are very unique, and if a visit can be timed for sunrise or sunset, it's rewarded with incredible pink, orange, and purple reflections on the water."

Alton Bay is a picture-perfect example of a classic New England lake town. In the summer, you'll want to spend all of your free time on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire's largest lake. Have your coffee on the dock, go for a swim, and read your book while lounging at Alton Bay Town Beach. Although you'll see the town's beauty better by boat, you don't have to head out on the water to understand what makes this place so special. You can also hike up Mount Major , one of the best things to do in town. When you've successfully navigated your way back down, reward yourself with a drink and something fried at Shibley's at the Pier .

Flathead Lake is one of the defining features of Bigfork, a small Western town located about 30 minutes southeast of Kalispell. "Being set along Flathead Lake, it has a kind of downtown where you could spend hours wandering locally owned shops on Electric Avenue before grabbing dinner by the water," says Martin. "The downtown feels both vibrant and relaxed, with art galleries, restaurants, and lake views around nearly every corner. And if you visit in the winter, you will feel as though you stepped onto the set of a Christmas Hallmark movie, making Bigfork the perfect year-round lake town." Plus, it's all complemented by views of the Swan Mountains and the sparkling blue lake.

"This scenic lake town is at the base of Grand Traverse Bay and is called the 'Cherry Capital of the World,'" says James Wallington , a travel expert and winner of The Amazing Race Season 32. While the tart cherries are the reason behind the nickname, they're not the only reason to visit Traverse City. "It's home to over 40 local wineries and is accessible for amazing day trips to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore or the historic Mackinac Island , both of which are major points of interest in Northern Michigan," says Wallington. "I love how versatile this town is because it could make for the perfect couple's escape, a relaxing getaway for the family, or an eventful weekend with friends. There are plenty of lodging options—one of my personal favorites being Grand Traverse Resort & Spa —or lake house rentals along the bay." Plus, you get the gorgeous views of the crystal-clear, deep Grand Traverse Bay.

California has a little bit of everything—beaches, mountains, deserts, and, of course, lake towns. Mason says Tahoe City is especially beautiful, pointing out "the perfect blend of stunning views, historic pioneer charm, and outdoor adventure." While the town itself is quite pleasant, Lake Tahoe is the crown jewel. "The water is crystal clear—on calm days it reflects the mountain peaks and sky perfectly. In summer, there are lots of water activities as well as hiking, and, in winter, skiing is in easy reach," she says. "There are lovely hotels right on the waterfront, and the town has great independent shops and local eateries."

The village of Lake Placid may be near the eponymous body of water, but it sits directly on the beautiful, shimmering Mirror Lake. "There are great views of the water throughout the town as well as lovely views of the Adirondack Mountains and the surrounding green forests. The shores of Mirror Lake deliver views of the mountains reflected in the water, often with canoes or kayaks on the lake," says Payne. "For travelers keen to see panoramic views of the area, I recommend a visit to the summit of Little Whiteface Mountain; experienced hikers can walk up, and there is a gondola for those who prefer easier access," says Payne.

"While many travelers head for Oregon's coasts or mountains, Lake Billy Chinook remains one of the state's most underrated summer escapes," says Martin. While you can base yourself in a couple of different lake towns, she prefers Madras. "Madras is the kind of town that rewards travelers who venture off the beaten path. With local ranching roots and wide-open desert views, it is a refreshing change of pace," she says. It isn't directly on Lake Billy Chinook, but the reservoir is just a short drive away. You can also opt to stay on the water the whole time; Lake Billy Chinook is one of the best places to enjoy a houseboat vacation .
