This Is the Best City for Art and Museums in the World—and No, It’s Not Paris or London

Sometimes, you want a breezy beach getaway , where all you do is sit on the warm sand and wait for the waiter to bring a fruity drink with a tiny umbrella—but sometimes the occasion calls for the exact opposite. You may want to explore a place filled with local restaurants and deep history that can take days, weeks, or many trips to fully uncover. And according to a new study by Tourlane , there's one particularly fantastic place to go for the latter. 

In November, the trip planning company released its list of the world's top cultural capitals. For the study, it first created a seed list of 50 cities worldwide known for active arts communities and a "strong landscape of museums." However, to ensure a fair comparison between cities of different sizes, the team averaged the key indicators per one million visitors, including the number of museums.

After combing through all the data, it named Mexico City the most culturally rich travel destination in the world.

"In 2026, Mexico City is unmissable for museum-goers," the team shared in its findings. "The city balances remarkable institutions, household names, and a restless contemporary scene quite like no other city."

While looking at the data, Tourlane found that the city has 44 art museums and a whopping 110 galleries, along with 19 history museums and 14 science museums, ensuring there's a bit of culture for every interest. 

"At the Palacio de Bellas Artes , Diego Rivera's monumental murals tell the story of modern Mexico, while at Casa Azul , the former home of Frida Kahlo, the artist's life and work come into close focus," The report stated. "The modern Museo Soumaya gathers European masters from Rodin to Dalí, while Muac and Museo Tamayo push tourists firmly into the present—spotlighting experimental voices and new media that feel unmistakably of today's Mexico." 

However, one place that feels illegal not to visit is the city's most-visited institution, the Museo Nacional de Antropología . "Their extraordinary collections open a window onto pre-Columbian cultures—from the Maya to the Aztec—and make the past feel close and alive," the report stated. As a bonus, the team found that the city has free museum access on the last Wednesday of each month from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. 

Coming in second is a destination across the Atlantic: London, England. Here, Tourlane shared, visitors can explore 72 art museums , 591 galleries, 73 history museums, and 22 science museums, with the British Museum ranking as its most popular spot. 

"Few cities bring art history to life quite like London. The density of iconic originals is remarkable: in The National Gallery alone, Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' and Monet's 'Water Lily Pond' capture the imagination of millions," the team shared. "The British Museum, visited by over four million people each year, houses Hokusai's 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa'—one of the most recognizable images in global art." 

Other cities to make the top 10 include Basel, Switzerland (No. 3), followed by Dublin, Ireland; Edinburgh, Scotland; Cape Town, South Africa ; Berlin, Germany; Seoul, South Korea; Warsaw, Poland; and Paris, France. Don't worry, some U.S. spots made the top 50 list, including New York City, which ranked at No. 29.
