Delta Refuses to Enforce a Costly Status Hike on Frequent Flyers

Airline loyalty programs have become more complicated as carriers adjust how passengers qualify for elite perks.

For frequent flyers, a higher spending threshold can mean booking extra trips or putting more expenses on a co-branded credit card just to retain benefits they previously earned.

Delta Air Lines is taking a different approach for another year, giving SkyMiles members more certainty as they plan their travel budgets.

The decision comes shortly after competitors announced changes to their own loyalty programs, making the rules for earning status an important consideration for travelers deciding where to concentrate their spending.

$28,000 MQD Diamond Threshold Anchors 2027 Status Requirements

Delta has confirmed that it will keep its Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) requirements unchanged for the next qualification year.

A Delta spokesperson confirmed the decision to The Points Guy on October 22, marking the third consecutive year the airline has held its thresholds steady.

The requirements remain:

  • Silver Medallion:$5,000 in MQDs

  • Gold Medallion:$10,000 in MQDs

  • Platinum Medallion:$15,000 in MQDs

  • Diamond Medallion:$28,000 in MQDs

MQDs measure qualifying spending rather than the number of miles flown. Delta's official qualification guide explains how members can earn them through eligible flights, vacation packages and certain credit card activity.

Eligible Amex Cards Yield $2,500 MQD Headstarts Toward Status

Members earn $1 MQD per dollar spent on eligible Delta-marketed flights, excluding government-imposed taxes and fees.

Eligible Delta Vacations packages also earn MQDs based on qualifying package spending, subject to the program's terms.

Certain Delta SkyMiles American Express cards offer additional ways to qualify. Eligible Platinum and Reserve cardholders receive a $2,500 MQD Headstart per card type each qualification year, while eligible purchases on those cards can earn additional MQDs.

Basic Economy tickets, for example, are excluded from earning credit toward Medallion status under Delta's current rules.

MQDs reset on January 1 each year, and excess earnings do not roll over. Spending during calendar year 2027 can earn status that remains valid through January 31, 2029, provided the member reaches the relevant threshold.

Unchanged MQD Tiers Counter United Premier 1K Spending Hikes

The unchanged requirements follow a major SkyMiles overhaul in late 2023 , when Delta faced backlash over proposed loyalty changes and subsequently reduced its MQD thresholds.

The latest decision keeps the current spending structure in place for a third consecutive year.

The timing also stands out because United Airlines and Southwest Airlines recently announced adjustments to their loyalty programs.

United raised the spending requirement for its top-tier Premier 1K status while eliminating flight segments as a qualification metric.

Southwest has also changed elements of its Rapid Rewards program, including requirements affecting its Companion Pass.
