When Disney Plus launched in 2019, parents around the country (including me) rejoiced. Long gone are the days of collecting individual videotapes or DVDs. Now, all it takes to gain access to almost the entire Disney movie catalog is one monthly subscription. From animated Disney classics to Pixar hits, there are so many movies to choose from.

You and your kids probably have your favorites, but when you want to mix it up without scrolling for a half-hour on the streamer, check out this handy list of family movies on Disney Plus — including some films that my daughter and I are always excited to watch. The movies are categorized by decade, and they include a mix of animated and live-action hits. There's also a special section dedicated to movie musicals because nobody does a sing-along quite like Disney.

Inside Out 2 (2024)

It took nine years to get a sequel to the original, but it was worth the wait. Riley is now 13 years old and discovers some new emotions: Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. As these emotions mingle with the characters from the first movie, there are plenty of hilarious moments and heartwarming scenes, too.

Turning Red (2022)

This coming-of-age story is great for tweens. It follows 13-year-old Mei Lee, and it's set in Toronto in 2002, so get ready for some major millennial nostalgia — from flip phones to portable CD players — that will delight you and pique your kids' interest. Similar to Inside Out 2 , the movie aims to help kids embrace different emotions instead of ignoring them.

Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

For a fantastical time, turn on this movie that traces the history of humans and dragons coexisting. Five hundred years after the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humankind, warrior Raya is on a journey to find the last remaining dragon and save the world. She also learns how to trust and work with other people in order to achieve her goal.

Luca (2021)

When you want summer vibes any time of year, turn on this animated feature set in the Italian Riviera during the 1950s. Luca is a sea monster who lives in the ocean, and when he meets a fellow sea monster named Alberto, his new friend shows him that they can turn into human boys once they're on land. They set off to Portorosso for a major adventure that includes teaming up with a new friend, Giulia, and learning about themselves along the way.

Soul (2020)

This one isn't technically a musical, but music is a big part of the story. Jamie Foxx voices Joe, a middle school band teacher who gets an opportunity to play music at a big jazz club in New York City. A twist of fate finds Joe in The Great Before, where he befriends soul 22 (played by Tina Fey), and the movie is about appreciating everyday life and finding joy in even the simplest moments.

Christopher Robin (2018)

If your kids liked Winnie the Pooh when they were younger, they'll love accompanying the beloved bear out of the Hundred Acre Woods and into the real world. All grown up with a career and family, Christopher Robin is surprised when Pooh shows up out of nowhere needing help reuniting with his friends, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, and Roo. Afterward, they realize that Christopher needs help too, and head to London to remind him of the joy of life.

Coco (2017)

Twelve-year-old Miguel is an aspiring guitarist, but his family's generations-old ban on music is stronger than his dreams. After accidentally finding himself in the Land of the Dead, he meets his deceased family and a trickster named Héctor, who help him return to the Land of the Living and reverse the ban on music.

Inside Out (2015)

An accessible (and delightful!) depiction of our feelings and how we all handle change, Inside Out follows the story of Riley as she moves from the Midwest to San Francisco for her dad's job. However, the real adventure starts when her Emotions — Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness — disagree on how to best help Riley during this major transition.

The Good Dinosaur (2015)

Taking place in a world where dinosaurs never became extinct, this heartwarming film is about a shy Apatosaurus named Arlo who lives on a farm with his parents and two siblings. When a rainstorm washes him miles downriver, he meets a Neanderthal boy named Spot who joins him on his journey home. 

Big Hero 6 (2014)

An inflatable healthcare robot with a whole lot of heart, Baymax is the brainchild of robotics prodigy Tadashi. After Tadashi dies in a fire, his brother Hiro — a prodigy in his own right — reactivates Baymax, and the two inadvertently discover the truth behind the tragedy. From there, they enlist the help of Hiro's other friends to defeat the supervillain responsible for Tadashi's death.

Toy Story 3 (2010)

Andy heads to college in the third installment of the franchise, and the original toys are mistakenly dropped off at a children's daycare. Buzz, Woody, and co. meet Ken, Mr. Pricklepants the hedgehog, and Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear, and all of them must band together when they find themselves in danger of not getting back home.

Up (2009)

Carl Fredricksen becomes the ultimate curmudgeon following the death of his wife, Ellie. After accidentally injuring a construction worker and being ordered to move into an assisted living facility, he decides to fulfill their lifelong dream of moving their house to Paradise Falls — by tying thousands of balloons on it, of course. He quickly discovers that Russell, a young scout trying to earn his final merit badge (assisting the elderly), has accidentally made himself a stowaway, which is just the beginning of all the setbacks to come on his journey. 

The Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

Kids who love to write stories and create fantasy lands will love this 2007 film that's based on the eponymous 1977 book . The movie follows fifth graders Jess and Leslie as they stumble upon Terabithia by using a rope to swing across a creek and enter this secret kingdom. Their imaginary world helps their friendship grow and allows them to face certain fears before heading back to the real world.

Ratatouille (2007)

There's nothing chefs despise more than a rat in a kitchen, but all Remy — a rodent — wants to do is become a chef himself. In order to fulfill his dream of cooking at Auguste Gusteau's restaurant, he develops a friendship with the garbage boy Alfredo Linguini. Of course, while improving his skills, his presence still has to remain a secret, and this is where the comedy really begins.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)

Your whole crew will know that "ohana means family" after watching Lilo befriend Experiment 626, also known as Stitch. There's a little something for everyone: from funny moments, like when Stitch pretends to be a dog so Lilo can adopt him, to more touching scenes, like when Stitch's actions show Lilo that they're family, because "family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten."

The Princess Diaries (2001)

Anne Hathaway and Mia Thermopolis are one and the same for millennials, so what better movie to stream for family night? Despite dealing with a very specific situation in which Mia finds out she's a secret princess, the themes about finding yourself and navigating "awkward" phases make this sweet 2000s teen rom-com a great pick for tweens.

The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

A little transformational magic turns Kuzco, an emperor, into a llama. Known for being a selfish ruler, Kuzco winds up stranded and needing to get back to his palace. He pairs up with a peasant named Pacha, who makes a deal with Kuzco to help get him home. Throughout the journey, Kuzco learns the value of friendship and thinking about other people besides himself.

The Parent Trap (1998)

A remake of a classic that's become a classic in its own right, this movie is about identical twins (both played by Lindsay Lohan) who don't know each other exists until they fortuitously meet at summer camp. After camp is over, Hallie, the Californian, and Annie, the Londoner, switch places and scheme to get their parents back together.

A Bug's Life (1998)

Rating: PG

A Bug's Life , which draws inspiration from Aesop's fable The Ant and the Grasshopper , stars an outsider ant named Flik who enlists the help of a troupe of Circus Bugs to save his colony from a gang of grasshoppers. Endlessly quotable, this is the kind of movie that all ages can appreciate for different reasons.

The Sandlot (1993)

When Scotty Smalls moves to the neighborhood, a young baseball prodigy takes him under his wing and invites him to play with the other boys. Needing a baseball for their game, Smalls borrows one signed by Babe Ruth from his stepdad — and then it gets hit over a fence into the yard of "the Beast." The boys have to work together to get it back, resulting in all kinds of chaos.

Cool Runnings (1993)

Originally intended to be a sports drama, this technically based-on-a-true-story comedy is about four sprinters who, after losing their chance to attend the Summer Olympics, attempt to compete in the Winter Olympics as Jamaica's first-ever bobsled team. The word "technically" is used because this is where the similarities between fiction and reality end: Everything else is changed or made up, but this does nothing to detract from how charming and uplifting the film is.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Okay, this is an '80s movie, but I couldn't not include it! This is the kind of fairytale the whole family will be enamored by. Join Westley, a poor farmhand, as he overcomes obstacles and meets new friends on his mission to rescue Princess Buttercup, his true love, from evil Prince Humperdinck. The Princess Bride is a cult classic based on a story of the same name that offers a little bit of everything: wit, adventure, romance, friendship, and comedy.

Encanto (2021)

Your whole family will be talking about Bruno after watching this animated musical. With a soundtrack co-produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda — he also penned eight songs for the movie — even your little ones who get "bored" during movies will be enchanted by the magical Madrigal family.

Moana (2016)

Rating: PG

Another project touched by Miranda, this movie is inspired by Polynesian mythology. Moana is the teenage daughter of a chief who's chosen by the ocean to save her people from an ancient curse. This adventure requires locating a demigod named Maui, and once she finds him, the two set sail on the ultimate voyage, confronting all kinds of seemingly impossible challenges.

Frozen (2014)

Rating: PG

Depending on how old your kids are, you might already have this movie on repeat in your home. But if you want something to really enjoy singing along to, there's nothing better than this musical about Anna and Elsa and everyone Anna meets on her journey: Kristoff and his reindeer, Sven, and Olaf the snowman.

Tangled (2010)

Rating: PG

This is the movie everyone was singing along to until Frozen came along. Mandy Moore voices Rapunzel in this musical that follows her journey after she escapes from her tower. She's accompanied by Flynn Rider, who is introduced as a thief but starts to show a softer side as he and Rapunzel work together to keep her free from the tower.

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Rating: G

And before Tangled , Anika Noni Rose's performance as Tiana delivered catchy, memorable songs as her character in the movie turns into a frog after kissing a cursed Prince Naveen. In her quest to become human again, Prince Naveen and her animal sidekicks — Louis the alligator and Ray the firefly — are always there to help.

High School Musical (2006)

Runtime: 1 hour and 40 minutes
Rating: TV-G

The only Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) on the list — the first HSM movie kicked off an unstoppable phenomenon. With classic songs like "We're All in This Together" and "Get Your Head in the Game," kids watching it for the first time will enjoy the true musical nature of the film.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997)

Rating: G

Though there are many film adaptations of Cinderella out there, this one stands out with its cast including the likes of Whitney Houston, Brandy, Whoopi Goldberg, and Bernadette Peters. The live television special has a campy quality that makes it all the more magnetic, and you'll all be humming "Impossible" for days after watching.

Aladdin (1992)

Rating: G

Nineties Disney movies hold a special place in millennial parents' hearts, and Aladdin is packed with songs your kids will be singing long after the credits roll. You might even need to lift up the corners of your living room rug to help your kids go on a "magic carpet ride."
