Once in a lifetime? Talking Heads frontman addresses band reunion talk

Talking Heads haven't toured since 1984 — and according to the band's frontman, David Byrne, there's no plans to change that.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone , Byrne confirmed that the iconic New York new wave band will not reunite. While the conversation focused on the artist's forthcoming solo album — September's "Who Is The Sky" — Byrne also quashed the idea of Talking Heads getting back together, and implied that the group was a "Once in a Lifetime" occasion, if you will.

"You realize you can't turn the clock back," he told Rolling Stone. "When you hear music at a certain point in your life, it means a lot. But it doesn't mean you can go back there and make it happen again."

In fact, since the conclusion of the band's 1984 tour supporting their record "Speaking In Tongues," they've only performed together once: at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in 2002.

Talking Heads fans can still hear Byrne's own spin on the band's songs during his massive solo tour, which launches next month and runs through the spring of 2026.

"I can mix and match and have it adapt to the sound that I'm doing at the moment without completely destroying the integrity of the older songs," he said. "But I'm also aware that there's a real trap. If you do too much of the older material, you become a legacy act that comes out and plays the old hits. You cash in really quick, but then you've dug yourself a hole."

In terms of his own farewell tour, the 73-year-old artist said, "I haven't thought about it."
